So far, we ain’t done so well with Texas governors in the WH.

I could picture someone who saw the name Kim Jong-il misreading it as Kim Jong-II, i.e. Roman numeral 2. Heck, a lot of people referred to the former president as “George Bush, jr.” which is also not strictly accurate but understandable.

I can understand it, for a typical American who doesn’t really follow foreign affairs. For a presidential candidate, and at a time when Kim Jong-il was regularly in the news, I find it pretty inexcusable.

Then why bring it up? Really, what point were you trying to make? Was it that you think that Perry can recover based upon similar gaffes by other successful politicians? Because you certainly did not convince me.

Pretty much. He is not a truly ignorant candidate like Herman Cain was.

Reading Kim Jong-Il, and thinking it’s Kim Jong II is not ignorant?

That reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Death comes for Bart, and Marge says: _Run, Bart! Run like the wined! – What? I’ve only ever read it…_

Come on, the US has been dealing very heavily with N. Korea ever since 2009 on the nuclear proliferation issue. Plus, it’s one of the gripes the GOP thinks they have with President Obama’s performance. Any American politician with alleged WH aspirations who doesn’t know Kim Jong-Il’s name is in fact truly ignorant.

There’s also a difference between knowing who the person is and having a slip of the tongue. I mean, in many fonts, it does look like II. Sometimes people have a hard time not reading what they see right in front of them. To me, it’s impossible to actively divine if an isolated incident is a gap in knowledge or a slight verbal fuckup. The only way to know for sure is through a body of missteps, to me.

He had eleven years experience governing one of the largest states in the nation, and did an excellent job with the economy during his term. He had lots of endorsements, and, most importantly, lots of financial backing from the establishment. I remember reading somewhere that he and Romney were the only candidates with enough resources to really run a 50-state campaign.
>
> Right now we’re going to New Hampshire, where Huntsman is campaigning hard, but even IF he got his moment in the spotlight, he does not have the resources to maintain his momentum. Perry is, I think, the only one with the resources to campaign hard and emerge as the front-runner against Romney.
>
> Thoughts?

I think anyone who was governor of Texas during a time when oil went from about $30 to about $90 was going to do well economically but that doesn’t mean that Perry won’t (or even shouldn’t) get credit.

Ultimately I think it will come down to his incredibly huge warchest. If Perry can in fact knock out the other not-Romneys then that will be a testament to the overwhelming importance of money.

All of those are fairly insensitive and politically incorrect. Then again it might just be red meat for the Republican primary.

I think he could recover in a decade or so. I still have hope that Jindal will recover his response to the state of the union address by giving about a million interviews where he comes off as laid back and casual. I still have hope that Jeb Bush can be rehabilitated by taking his wife’s maiden name and become the first hispanic president.

They would have voted Bush in for a third term if they could.

The nuclear proliferation dates back to the Clinton administration, and of course the U.S. has had soldiers in the Korean peninsula since the 1950s. I can understand making this mistake if you’ve never seen the name before, but if you’re running for president, it’s something you should probably know. If you know that Kim Jong-Il’s father was Kim Il-Sung, you won’t call him Kim Jong II. If you don’t know that, you know very little about North Korea, which is a problem if you want to be president.

Jeb Bush isn’t Hispanic, and he wouldn’t become Hispanic just by changing his name.

Unfortunately, all those candidates would still be on the various primary ballots (hell, in Virginia, Perry isn’t) so it’s still not a cake walk. It would be the obliterated ash particles that once constituted Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, and Ron Paul, vs. Rick Perry. Considering that a dead man’s delegates just make a decision in the convention, I would still say it’s an uphill climb.

He really is the worst presidential candidate (in comparison to his hype before entering) I think I’ve ever seen.

Worse than Fred Thompson? I guess so… Thompson just didn’t give a fuck, Perry seems to be trying.
