Since I do tech support for a web hosting company, I’ve got a PC and a Linux box on my desk. I do 90% of my troubleshooting from the Linux box, telnetting, sshing, vi-in, dnsvi-ing and so on. I grew up on Macs, but dang, I like the power of this stuff.
Funny story (or not, maybe):
On a visit to my parents, on the drive home from the airport, I was telling them about how I was starting to learn Unix, and how I was really impressed with how powerful and versatile it was.
Mostly, my parents have learned to nod their head yes when I start talking about techie stuff, but this time, my mom asked in a puzzled voice:
“How do you spell that?”
For a couple of minutes there, she thought I was giving glowing reviews of the _eunuchs_ that I work with. Had I not been wearing my seatbelt, I think I might have fallen out of the car, laughing as hard as I was.

I UNIX. As a software tester for a large BI software company I test on four platforms: AIX, SOL, HPUX 1020 and 11.
Funny thing, my VERY first exposure to Unix (as in: I’d never even heard of it) was 2.5 years ago in school - four weeks, 4 hrs per day “Intro to Unix” course if you will.
I started my job (right out of school) testing under Windows 95 and NT. Moved up to Win98 for a while and dabbled in Win 2000. I made the mistake of mentioning, casually, that yep, I had some training in Unix and would like to hone those skills one of these days.
Presto - I’m now testing on Unix. I have to tell you it sure doesn’t like me too much.
Boo hoo, I miss Windows.
