The tally to date: Number of Dopers who weigh over 140 = 116 Number of Dopers who weigh under 140 = 50 Number of Dopers who weigh about 140 = 7 So far, it is more than 2 to 1 of people who weigh over the supposed 140 pound norm that was used in calculating the number of people safely expected to get on the ship that sunk (see the link in the OP for the story). This does not take many other factors into consideration, but if you imagine someone simply counting heads as passengers boarded the ship, I think you can see there might be a problem using the 140 pounds=average adult method of determining a safe weight for the boat to handle. A lot of the news stories have mentioned this 140 pounds might no longer be a fair and accurate weight. So far, this decidedly unscientific poll agrees that number is flawed. Feel free to continue to post your y/n answer and I will calculate again later to see if the numbers change. ---

All we’re determining here is whether or not 140 is the median weight among Dopers. A median is not an average. (But dre2xl’s comments seem on the money) And Dopers may not represent the average american, because a) there may be a gender imbalance (historically there are more men than women online, but I can’t say if that’s true for the Dope) b) folks who spend a lot of time on the Dope may weight the sample towards sedentary folk. c) We quite probably have weightier brains than the average American. My apologies if all this has been said already. I was too lazy to read the whole thread. And Yes, I’m over 140#. If I ever drop to 140 it’ll be due to some wasting disease or having a leg amputated or something. ---
