Do your cats like to be brushed?

We have two cats, a fat siamese tux and an athletic domestic shorthair. Whenever we get up and start walking somewhere, the fat one sprints to the kitchen in the hope of getting some food. The shorthair sprints to the bathroom, hoping that we’ll get the hint and brush her.

Tybalt, the fuzzy black land shark, loves the brush. He goes nuts when he sees it in my hand, squalling, purring, rubbing my leg, and otherwise bringing himself near to kitty orgasm. He lets me brush a couple of strokes, then he rubs his face against the bristles for a while, then he lets me brush again. If it were up to him, I could brush him for a solid hour without interruption, but given how much hair comes off him, I don’t know how much cat would be left after an hour.

Lucia is indifferent to it, but she is a short-haired kitty.

Brushing Austen, who has longer and thicker fur, I can get enough loose hair off of her to knit another cat. She loves being brushed, and especially enjoys the fine-toothed flea comb–actually, she enjoys it so much in a rapturous, butt-in-the-air kind of way that it makes me almost feel that this is an inappropriate way for me to be touching her.

Maybe I’m just using the wrong type of brush! We have something along these lines, which pulls the loose fur out really well, and seems like it would feel good on their skin. That Furminator looks crazy! Ooh, there’s a coupon! Maybe that’s the ticket, if I can only get a few licks in, make them count! Sometimes I walk around behind Elmer (the one with the really thick coat) and brush him as he walks, until he gets sick of it and hides from me. I guess I’m not endearing him to the brush by chasing him with it, but I’m tired of picking up hairballs, and I suspect he’s the culprit.

I agree it looks goofy, but I took the suggestion of silenus and just got one today, for a totally ridiculous price of $30…probably cost them $2 to make it, but it’s worth every penny!

I brush each of our two cats daily, and afterwards use a comb to get te hair out of the brush. Each time get a tiny amount, even with vigorous brushing.

I just used the Furminator and got an absolutely astonishing amout of hair from each cat. Kept using it and kept getting more. Now the guys look really slick and their fur is softer.

Nether one was really crazy about it, even though they loved the brush. One really yelled when I did his belly, but tolerated it on the rest of the body. I hope they come to like it more. It is an amazing tool that works like a charm. Many thanks silenus
