Doc Ock throwing a car.

I think the new explanation of Superman’s powers is he has “contact telekinesis” so he really is lifting the entire plane.

Threads like this are interesting to me on a couple of levels. On one level, they are often informative, and on another level, they force me to realize that I will never truly get my geek/nerd ‘bonafides,’ because i can’t even imagine ever consuming my entertainment like this.

Science of Discworld is not that kind of book. Instead you’ve got real science essays by real scientists about real world science, with Pratchett’s DW characters throwing in what’s, in essence, colour commentary about how “this doesn’t make any sense in OUR universe, where’s the narrativium ? And how come your 1 in a million chances don’t work 9 times outa ten as they’re supposed to ?!”
It’s kinda funny in parts, but it’s really a book in search of an audience. I, a Pratchett fan (IOW, a nerd) don’t need to be schooled on science. But people who DO need to be schooled on science aren’t going to be drawn in by a huge “Terry Pratchett” marquee on the cover.

How old are you?

That was the new explanation in 1986. It’s been ignored, retconned, changed and rebooted a few times since then.

Apparently Miller has the superpower to swoosh Straight Dope members.

I promise only to use it for good. Ish.

But it’s from 1969. It’s seminal.

Yes. That was a pretty bad pun.

I wouldn’t go that far. It’s worth a glans.

I’m still trying to figure out why Doc threw the car at him in the first place. He wanted Peter to use as bait to draw Spiderman out, and Pete’s not much use as bait once he’s gotten smooshed flat by a flying BMW.

No, my point was that if the Hulk grabbed the landing skid of a helicopter as it was flying away and pulled on it, all that would happen is he’d be doing a chin-up on the landing skid as it flew away with him.

The only way you can pull a helicopter back to you is if you brace yourself with the ground as you’re doing so. Like Captain America did in Civil War.

Oh, what deferens does it make?

These puns will make interest in this topic peter out.

Cap does this in civil war - puny hulk.

The Justice League animated series was great, but I always got annoyed when, after pounding each other for a while with bare fists, someone would grab a big rock or steel beam or the like to finish the other guy off. Given that we’ve seen these guys shatter boulders and tear steel with their bare hands, this makes about as much sense as a bare knuckle boxer trying to knock out his opponent with a whiffle bat or a chunk of Styrofoam.

Well, if the girder is 20 times long than one’s arm, there may be an issue of mechanical advantage…

Of course, what doesn’t make sense is characters who can catch bullets standing still while watching an enemy swing a fist, or girder.

No, Cap holds onto the helicopter with one hand and the edge of the landing pad with the other. His weight is irrelevant, as long as his arms are strong enough.

This is what always bothers me about The Flash. How could anyone ever lay a hand on him?
