While many citizens of the USA are, in fact, woefully disengaged from the political system, assigning their level of functionality as an electorate to that of mentally challenged children playing chess is absurd. Remember, the USA voted for George W. Bush not just once, but twice. In a row! Now if THAT doesn’t provide a legitimate riposte to the heinous characterization in **DoctaG** ’s post, then I shall be forced to resort to even more heavy sarcasm. ---

Whats exactly wrong with \*\*Docta G’\*\*s statement. The United States and its citizens have many qualities to commend them (the cups overflowing infact) but the level of political discourse is not one of them. ---

He was just reminding a group of (mostly) Americans engaging in political discourse that they resembled retarded children. It wasn’t meant to be _insulting_. Just the other day I was on a Pakistani forum and mentioned that seeing Pakistanis discussing women’s rights was like watching a German Shepherd trying to play a trombone with its asshole. I admit I have nothing to go on but the one link in the op. that said I am pretty much with the good Docta, I mean have you actually stepped out of your own head and looked at political discourse in this country? a place where evolution denial is considered a good thing for your political career? this is a pretty dumb pitting (going on the op alone) ---

I can’t believe I’m responding to this with any seriousness, but… the thing is, the post I was responding to was not in a thread about the tea party or fox news or people-making-fun-of-Romney-for-things-that-happened-30-years-ago or people-complaining-about-who-wears-flag-pins or any of a number of other things that tend to dominate PUBLIC “debate” about American politics. Rather, it was in an SDMB GD thread that was actually fairly far over towards the polite and respectful and meaningful side of the bell curve. Sure that thread wasn’t perfect or anything, but it was a thread in which a lot of Americans were doing some not-totally-unreasonable discussion of a vaguely interesting issue, one which did NOT involve most of the things which happen so often which make so much political debate idiotic. I will put the level of discourse _in that thread_ up against the average level of public political debate in any other country in the world. So, here we are in this GD thread, and in comes someone who drops a one-line dismissive insulting and irrelevant pile of verbal turd, and it pissed me the heck off.
