He doesn’t? Peter Capaldi and Christopher Eccleston were both pretty acerbic and impatient of human foibles–not quite to House levels but definitely not cozy smoochy. And yes, those two ARE my favorite Doctors and I’m pretty sure I know what that says about me. 😉

Definitely the point (at least being a manipulative bastard) of the Sylvester McCoy character. Ace even calls him out on it.

I confess my own ignorance of the pre-reboot Doctors because I didn’t follow the show back then and my own attention span has defeated my efforts to become better educated. The First Doctor was pretty cranky too though, yeah?

Pertwee was — uh, straightforward? — as the Third Doctor: he’s the smartest guy in the room, and he wants everyone to know it, and he’s got an aristocratic bearing, and he roughs people up in hand-to-hand combat as Plan A; you get the idea.

Yeah, that was my first thought - about Capaldi, anyway. He was one of my favorite Doctors too, _because_ he was like that (my favorite is Ten, but Twelve is a close second).

I like Capaldi a lot, but I think he often crossed the line from “acerbic” to “grumpy areshole”.

See, you’ve just now reminded me that John Hurt’s stint as The War Doctor got him dubbed ‘Captain Grumpy’ by his later incarnation: he’s willing to use lethal force, so his gravelly lines run the gamut from _“you leave me no choice”_ to _“whatever the cost”_ to _“I’ll have to live with that”_ to _“I’m going to need your gun.”_
