Does ALL commercial and military shipping go through the Panama canal now?

When I boarded an Iowa in 1986 I was surprised at how narrow in the beam they were.

I was wondering about that, I was aware that service roads were being constructed already, but not much about the main proyect, and then I found this today, and “hot out of the [del]presses[/del] servers”:

Wasn’t Port Stanley (Falkland Islands) a big port before the Panama Canal opened? I wonder how many ships stop at Port Stanley these days?

I doubt it. Why would it be?

Actually, Port Stanley served as a major repair station for ships using the Straits of Magellan route, and also served as a coaling station for the Royal Navy.

In 2011, the German Navy sail training ship, the Gorch Fock, sailed through the Strait of Magellan. This was done for training purposes only, the ship subsequently sailed North along the coast of South America and it returned through the Panama canal. (It was an ill-fated journey, BTW, but for different reasons).
