Does anyone else ice fish?

I have never went but my grandfather did and he loved to do it. My mother told me the story of how he built himself an ice shanty in the basement but it was to large to get out. :o

I guess he started all over and built a collapsible one.

Yo, yo, yo.

I haven’t been ice fishing since I was a kid. I use these for skiing and they’re not too warm. I don’t put them directly on the feet though - they go between the socks + boots.

I use the handwarmers but hadn’t seen the toastie toes. The handwarmers caution against putting in shoes.

The foot warmers are all thinner than the handwarmers I’ve seen, and they don’t seem to get as hot. They work great, but only last a few hours.

Don’t you guys do it in houses? Toasty warm in a little house with a tv, propane heater, hook for the snowmobile suit because its too warm and you need to crack a window, card table, poker chips, case of beer…

I don’t ice fish, but my understanding from my dad is this is how it is accomplished. My kids - including my eight year old daughter - were out with him last weekend (they don’t drink the beer and are lousy poker players though). The ice house is smaller than the previous one, the previous one had me worried about the state of my parent’s marriage.

It depends on what this “it” is you’re referring to

Some people do ice fish in ice fishing shacks; they have the permanent ones where you tow it out on the ice and it has your name and address on it, and (hopefully) you haul it back in in prior to the spring thaw. Then you have the little portable collapsible ones.

It’s a lot like camping. Do you prefer to go out with everything under the sun, or just be a minimalist?

I prefer to camp/ice fish like a survivalist of sorts. I do make an exception when it comes to clothes and beverages though

No experience of kids or ice fishing, but frozen toezies-yep, I know all about 'em. A bizarre sounding but (in my experience) effective way to keep them piggies warm for a while is to **sprinkle a half teaspoon or so of cayenne pepper in one’s boots *before puting them on. Of course, if one does this, one’s socks are *subject to have red streaks on them from then on out…

Me, I have a low tolerance for low temperatures, and dealt with the frigid digits issue by moving to California, where it hardly ever gets that cold.

I’m all for the clothes and beverages, but not so much on the adult beverages while ice fishing. One, it reduces your chances of noticing that you’re cold – which sounds good, till you have frostbite. Two, alcohol will also make you feel warmer, but by rushing blood to your extremities it lowers your core temp, which is Not A Good Thing, unless you’re into hypothermia.

Not to mention after you finish ice fishing, you still have to drive home. Not a good idea with many adult beverages in your bloodstream.

Well, Dave Barry can’t quite explain why it is fun, but he does make you laugh.
