Does anyone else read the obituaries of strangers?

I think there was just the one time I poked through the obits. I was looking for the fella I’d shared a hospital room with a few nights earlier.

Mostly, I was curious to see how the cause of death would be listed, as I was there for the event in question.

Yeah, I read them. It’s a habit I picked up from my Mom, who is a Hospice nurse (she’s checking for obits of recently deceased patients). One thing that drives me absolutely mad is that, in my local paper at least, many obits list “her late husband Robert” or “his late grandmother Irene” in the “survived by” section. This is wrong! You’re not survived by someone if they’ve predeceased you! Gah. I know that it’s just a way to acknowledge important people in the obit owner’s life, but jeez, it bugs the crap out of me.
