My daughter-in-law’s father is in the hospital with pneumonia and has tested positive for both Covid and SARS. He’s a doctor with a geriatric practice. That may not have been where he got it, though. He and his wife always looked forward to traveling as they got older and although they’ve cut back, they’ve taken at least two plane trips this year. Arizona, to visit their son’s family, and Orlando, for the mouse.

On the up side, they’ve been pushing for everyone to get together for Thanksgiving and Christmas, with ‘everyone’ including relatives from out of state. That’s been called off.

We had someone on the custodial staff test positive, and they are not careful when they have lunch–so now 3/4 of our custodians are out. Substitute custodians are not really a thing. Whoo hoo, this will be interesting.

Wow, really sorry about your mom @Nars_Glinley . Hope dad pulls through.

I heard more about my grandma. Apparently she DID have full-blown symptoms, it’s just NOW she is dealing with loss of smell. Dunno how my uncle missed that she was not doing well. It’s really something else that she survived! (she’s 90)

One of my childhood friends just got diagnosed. He has gotten the gastrointestinal symptoms. He went to the ER and got tested and they sent him home to ride it out in isolation. He’s posting regular updates, hope he comes through it.

My friend and I are pretty sure her brother and SIL have it. But they won’t get tested. Her brother PASSED OUT AT WORK and refuses to get tested. What a fuckin knob.

Talked to my BIL last night. Two cousins (who are brothers) are now positive. Due to their youth, they don’t seem to be in much distress, but I don’t know how it will affect their parents.

Not exactly Covid, but one of my Dad’s friends kept putting off necessary surgery (Covid fears) until it was critical. Dad told me a few days ago that friend didn’t survive the surgery. I wonder how many secondary deaths will occur due to fear-driven deferred medical treatment?

A colleague of mine, and his wife, were both diagnosed in the past few days. I talked with him briefly yesterday; he said that his wife (who just turned 50) is in the hospital, and isn’t doing well. ☹

My dad hadn’t heard from one of his friends for a few days, and found out that he’d contracted a fatal case of COVID. ☹

My mother did say that in addition to being a senior citizen, he was significantly overweight and diabetic, and had recently gone to an out-of-town casino, so he had multiple risk factor all at once.

One of my old co-workers and his wife were diagnosed last week. She died yesterday and he is still in the hospital, but not in ICU. They are in their 40s. They adopted a little girl from China about 8 years ago. I’m so hoping her father gets to go home to her.

Our friends had to quarantine awhile back. The wife ended up with it. Her husband’s parents both got it, and his father died from it about a month ago.

My daughter, who works as a CSM at Walmart, has a wicked sinus/cough thing going on, and she gets exhausted very quickly, and is very congested. No fever, though. So, that’s good. She just started taking an OTC expectorant, but, it isn’t helping, yet. She’s going to go to work tonight, and see what happens. She’s very careful about keeping her mask on, hand washing, and sanitizing her hands. So, she’s not sure she’s got COVID. She is thinking it’s just a sinus infection, or something. She won’t get paid if she stays home, so, she’ll be going to work, as usual.

If she doesn’t have COVID, she’s more at risk because her immune system is compromised right now. She should stay home if she possibly can.

Losing a day’s wages is not as traumatic as losing a person.

Grrrrrr!!!

The no sick pay thing is why people continue to work while sick, spreading whatever they have, including covid. I am so livid about companies that do that, particularly when the workers are low-paid and going 2-4 weeks without pay would be utterly disastrous.

I was careful with wearing a mask, washing my hands, etc. but I still got it. Not everyone runs a fever with covid (and yes, not every illness is covid).

My employer replaced my salary when I was sick with the 'rona, as people around here often call it, so our sick workers stay home until they’re better and stores don’t become super-spreader locations.

The problem is that an illness can easily last a week, and losing a week’s pay is more of a problem than losing a day’s pay.

I was ill and in bed 8 days and on medical leave for 3 weeks with covid and by no means have I had the worst case among people I know.

Walmart does have enough money to cover sick leave but they don’t, because profits are so much more important than people to the people who run the place.

I know people for whom losing a day’s wage means deciding what day you don’t eat or what bill doesn’t get paid. I suspect many WalMart employees are like that.

Also true for any co-worker infected by the person who goes to work sick, however.

A nasty situation, all the way around.
