I know, you probably love it in ranch dressing, pancakes & biscuits. I’m talking about drinking the stuff. I ask because I love buttermilk, and I don’t know anyone else who would admit to it. mmm ---

I love it! It has a pleasant yogurt-y, nutty tang. I also like to use it to make creme fraiche, but don’t tell my cardiologist. ---

I can’t even stand the smell of buttermilk. Usually when it’s called for in a recipe, I think yogurt with milk and use that. If I must use it, I breathe through my mouth until it’s mixed in and dump the carton as soon as possible. I can’t imagine drinking it on purpose. ---

I usually sneak a swig when I’m making cornbread or waffles but I don’t drink it in cold blood. 😉 That said, one time I was making waffles and I didn’t have any buttermilk and not enough regular milk. I did as **overly** does with the milk and plain yogurt … and everyone agreed it tasted even better in the waffles than buttermilk did! I still keep buying it, though. And with that, I’m moving this thread **to Cafe Society from IMHO** , since it’s a foodie discussion. ---

No, but my dad drinks it straight. \<\\> I try to keep buttermilk in the house for cooking, but if I’m out then I’ll sour some milk with vinegar as a substitute. The worst is pouring long-expired buttermilk down the sink (gloop, gloop, gloop). ---

Yes - I love buttermilk. Especially when used to make Koldskål - a traditional Danish summer dish. Wonderful. [I posted a recipe in another thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=11091384&postcount=29)- I dare you to try it and tell me you didn’t like it. ---

It’s a fun beverage. It has fewer calories than 1% milk, and a much more interesting flavor. One reason I enjoy drinking buddymilk is the feeling of traveling into the past, when it was a more common and respected refreshment. ---
