Does anyone like Captain Beefheart?

I saw them live at Woolsey Hall in New Haven in 1972.
Surreal cannot describe the evening. A 100 Harleys or more neatly parked outside
along College Street and Grove.

It was at this visit to New Haven that Van Vliet and Gary Lucas met in an interview
at WYBC where Lucas was the station music director.

I followed them ever since. Fondly.

I’m a huge prog fan and I never really got it.

It just occurred to me that Beefheart did some vocals on Zappa’s album “Hot Rats”. One of my favorites.

Here he is on Willy the Pimp:

I like Captain Beefheart, but he can take a while to warm up to. Trout Mask Replica is probably one of the more difficult ones to get into. I’d try Safe as Milk first.

I think its great. Nothing unlistenable there, is it?

I once put on Trout Mask Replica for a girlfriend. She said, “that kinda reminds me of Ornette Coleman.” That was 20 years ago, and we’re still together.

Now that’s awesome.

You are a lucky man.

Yes, I am. Neither of our sons is into “oddball” music, but they love offbeat indy movies. Neither has reached adulthood, so there’s time.
