It took me a few weeks of saying to myself _damn-those voices sound familiar_ before I realized that the B-52s did the theme music for the cartoon _Rocko’s Modern Life_. Now **tuckerfan** can sing along: _I’ve got me a Chrysler, it seats about twenty, so hurry up and bring your juke box money_ ---

Kate Pierson described the band herself early in their career as “a tacky little dance band from Athens GA”. I’ve been pretty okay with that all these years. Their first two albums were a lot of fun, abeit an acquired taste. Then they lost me with Mesopotamia. Then they won me back(mostly) with Whammy! Then Ricky Wilson died and I thought that was it for them. Then When they came out with Cosmic Thing, I thought, wow, they’re actually still pressing on. Then Love Shack. It bugs me to no end that Love Shack and Roam are their two biggest hits, and (IMHO) sound nothing like the weirdness and fun that were their first two albums. These two singles sound…planned. Like they said hey, if we were going to sell out, and make a really TOP 40 record how would it sound? By Comparison,“Dance this mess Around” has a goddam toy piano on it fer gosh sakes!!! Now I hear Kate Pierson lecture with her PETA friends like she’s this big A-List celebrity and I just shake my head. Chris W ---

The B52s are the band that opened up my musical world. I was a music snob in highschool; classical and show only. Then the B52s’ first album\* ate my brain. It came out my junior year in highschool, and on Senior Day, near the end of the year, when the graduating seniors got to do whatever the hell they wanted, they played “The B52s” over th PA system at lunch. It was as if I had been blind but now could see; was deaf but now could hear, amen. I never looked back. Now music is one of my two main obsessions. \*_Nit: I hate it when people refer to an artist’s album as a “CD.” CD is just another format: albums can come on vinyl, cassette tape, 8track tape, reel to reel, and pretty soon everything wil exist only digitally. Why is it that only this johnny-come-lately format–the CD–has become the generic term for album? Anyway, I mention that here because to refer to the B52’s first two CDs is silly; my vinyl copies were well wore out before the CD was a glimmer in Sony’s eye._ ---

About four years ago, one Sunday morning at church, they played a video from Assembly of God HQ promoting Teen Church Camp- the song was titled, of course “Church Camp” & both it & the video were dead-on parodies of “Love Shack”. I was so proud that someone at A/G HQ was enough of a B-52s fan to capture it so well! My only regret was that I didn’t nab a copy of that. ---
