That one had me for a while, too. But it’s plot is different, even tho some of the details are similar.  
Besides, I found it. _INVADER_ by Albert Hill - The reviews match up for the plot we remember, plus, it has the name of the weapon, “graser.”

The title, timing (1980) and plot details make one wonder if the inspiration didn’t come from the video game, Space Invaders.
