Ah! Light slowly dawns. :smack: Heck, that other one got contentious quickly, eh? And I thought the adoration/detestation of Marmite was a tricky enough subject.

No, I do believe there is a difference. That is, I seem to recall a bit of compare and contrast of Marmite, Vegemite, shop-brand yeast extract and some brand of yeast extract and vegetable extract the name of which escapes me now, and examining the labels etc, and I don’t think it’s purely branding. Haven’t got any of them in front of me now, though, in order to check. Perhaps some Aussies will happen along and we can have Marmite wars. 🙂

And I will remember to add some to shopping list.

Didn’t actually forget, just figgered it was giving away the store to supply that link but thanx anyway.

I think it’s actually a rule that you’re supposed to supply a link to a thread if you’re parodying it.

Either way, I was apparently the only person who understood what you were getting at. If what you wanted was a discussion on the pros and cons of marmite, you have achieved your goal.

You might be interested to know that the Marmite in Australia is actually made in New Zealand. 😉

Also, Vegemite is awful, awful stuff.

Marmite is a product that was invented to serve a need-that of brewers-on how to MAKE MONEY ON something they used to throw away. The stuff is the dried residue of the yeast used in brewing beer. Formerly, the stuff was either thrown out, or used to feed cattle and pigs. Some genius found out that you could bottle the stuff ND SELL IT TO HUMANS.
tO ME, THAT’S A TRIUMPH OF MARKETING.

What a _rebel_. I’m so darned impressed by your _wild ways_. I bet you jaywalk, too.

Dude, I’m not a mod and I don’t give a shit how many rules you break. But it turns out there might actually be a good reason for this one, since no one had a fucking clue what your point was. Enjoy your thread about marmite.

Very modest–too modest, in fact. You had a clue, and I appreciate your insight.

yeah, I know you’re a mod, but that doesn’t excuse you for making a mistake..
For, you see, your reasoning is totally, totally, totally wrong…
On the subject of Marmite,

1. there are no pros, only cons.
2. Marmit is not a “food-like” product.

It is not even a product..
It is simply EVIL…unspeakably evil.

(Although there is some evidence that it may be useful as axle grease, but even then only in emergencies. Please move this thread to the “Unspeakably evil axle grease” Forum)

I was introduced to Marmite about a year ago by a South African client, and as an American who had never tried the stuff before I have to say…I actually kind of like it. Enough to go out and buy myself a little jar at the British grocery. To me, it basically tastes like soy sauce. Until this thread, I almost forgot I had it in my cupboard. Breakfast tomorrow shall be marmite on toast and tea!

I’m unclear on the difference between Marmite and vegemite, but can attest to the vile existence of vegemite. What the heck is Promite?

Shows what you know…

There is **Marmite** (UK version)
There is **Vegemite** (Aussie product)

These two have a broadly similar taste, although I prefer Vegemite.

There is **Marmite** (NZ version from Sanitarium, labelled as **Promite** in the UK and places where Marmite is already a UK trademark)
This is the real stuff, the toast-spreading goodness that drives the All Blacks.

Cite for this? I’ve been unable to confirm. Wiki’s article on promite doesn’t mention it, and notes the recent reformulation of promite, which apparently has consumers dissatisfied.

You know, at some point along the line, I must have been conned, and got palmed off with some Aussie pretender. My daughter would have consumed most of it, anyhow, and she varies between vegemite and marmite. She probably would not care about the difference. :smack:

Sorry for the misinformation, but I rarely do the purchasing any more. My wife makes the regular trips to London for “essential supplies” and I took her word for it. But we do see Sanitarium Marmite with the Marmite label now, and I had noticed the change.
