I’ve been on record since Dan Savage made _santorum_ a nelogogism for something extraordinarily disgusting (other than Rick Santorum) as saying that I thought that was witless, juvenile, and a shot in the foot to gay activism. (If you’re not familiar you can google, I won’t link, though I’d advise against it unless you’re just super curious.)

However, do you think that Santorum is intentionally referencing it or clueless or… what… to come up with this ad? Or is it not really Rick Santorum approved?

It’s Santorum approved. It’s boosting his rating in the polls. A lot of people are clueless. And the joke is old.

He’s clueless. With everything Rick has frothed out about people, well certain kinds of people that in aggregate make up a majority of humanity, are you really surprised?

I think it’s clear in the ad that Santorum (or rather, his totally-not-coordinating-Super-PAC) are referring to the political practice of “mudslinging”, and are slamming Romney for negative advertising\*. Now, it might have been wise to pick a thicker, chunkier mud for use in the video, because it sure looks suggestive in context. Therefore, I think we can chalk this up to ignorance.
\*Which is totally meta. I mean, negative advertising about how much negative advertising your opponent is doing?

I think [this column by Jon Bershad](http://www.mediaite.com/online/rick-santorums-campaign-really-just-made-an-ad-where-his-picture-is-splattered-with-frothy-brown-sludge/) sums up my response pretty well:

> As an “underfunded candidate,” Grace argues, the team needs publicity and are hoping that someone in Romney’s camp will call out the “santorum” connection, thus making them seem even dirtier (Romney had a good chance to take the bait this morning but didn’t).
>
> It’s a good theory and one I’m going to subscribe to. Not because I necessarily think that’s what’s happening, but because it’s the only explanation that isn’t entirely insane.

Maybe Rick’s new strategy is to own the Santorum.

Eh, the dog loved it. That’s per Mitt himself. (In nature, wild dogs natural habitats are small confined spaces on top of large objects going 70 mph with continual fast objects around them on all sides.)

I disagree completely. If Savage hadn’t done what he did, Santorum’s comments at the time would have been a minor little blip on the radar . . . and then they would have sank, forgotten, into the murk of the many many _many_ bigoted and hateful things that Republican and conservative politicianss have said.

Santorum basically said on record that one of my closest friends from college, and the woman who _should_ be her wife, are no better than goat-fuckers, and the gay couple who used to live next door to us and were hands-DOWN the best neighbors I’ve ever had are no better than child rapers.

Making sure that this hateful filth was never forgotten is pretty damn helpful to the gay activism movement, I’d say.

I absolutely disagree. Santorum is responsible for his bigotry, and it needs to be attacked in whatever means are available. There’s nothing new or wrong about combining politics with humor.

Personally, I’m surprised nobody’s done this with Phelps.

What would be the point? The problem with Rick Santorum is that enough people like him to elect him to high office, so there’s a value in reminding people what a piece of shit he really is. But Phelps? Every single person on Earth who isn’t a part of his church already thinks he’s an asshole. Nobody needs to be reminded or convinced of that fact.

Not to mention that the only people in his “Church” are the members of his family.
