One shows up in The Dark Knight Strikes Back. And i spotted a kids batcave playset, complete with all the gadgets like the batmobile, batboat, etc. and in the pack was a little toy dinosaur too. Is this a regular thing? Does it show up often?
The classic Silver Age Batcave had a dinosaur, a giant penny or dime (I forget which) used by Two-Face, and many other trophies from Batman’s previous cases and gadgets taken from his rogues gallery. Along the way, that Batcave was destroyed and most of his spoils were probably destroyed as well, but I don’t know when that happened, or who did it.
It was a giant penny, and came from Joe Coyne from “The Penny Plunderers.”
Two-Face used a silver dollar. It was normal sized.
Glancing through old issues, I believe the Batcave was destroyed during the No Man’s Land earthquake (the giant penny and joker card are shown in the rubble).
The Dinosaur is one of the more oft-referenced bits of memorabilia in the 'Cave, along with the giant Joker and the Penny.
As a footnote, in the Animated Bat-Universe, the Penny was a tool of Two-Face. He recounts the tale in “Almost Got 'Em”, one of the best episodes, lamenting, “And they let him keep the penny!”
That must be what I was thinking of, although I knew about Two-Face’s normal coin, the acid-scarred silver dollar.
The dinosaur was a life-sized animatronic from a theme park, wouldja believe?
But two-headed.

I could’ve sworn that there was a story about how Batman and Robin were caught by Two-Face, and Two-Face tied them to the penny. I forgot why, but some event occurred, and the penny was to flip them to their doom, being flipped upon a bed of spikes. However, Batman and Robin used their weight to change the flip so that they would land on the side without them on it. This wasn’t Two-Face?
And, where exactly did the dinosaur come from? Someone please spoil that story for me.
In other words, the dinosaur wasn’t prepared?
I thought the penny was from The Joker’s Crime Costumes.
The tyrannosaurus also shows up in Kingdom Come.
Volume II of Batman:TAS has an episode where Bats mentions that the mint gave him the giant penny for stopping TwoFace from stealing a bunch of $2 bills.
“…and then what happened?”
“I THREW A ROCK AT 'IM!”
“…”
“It was a really big one!”
I swear I missed the entire second part of CandidGamera post.
The Flash (excited): Hey! That’s a giant dinosaur!
Alfred (dry): And I thought Batman was the detective.
The dinosaur showed up multiple times in 1950s-1960s Batman comics. I seem to recall one issue referring to it as a trophy friom the case with “Doctor Doom” – obviously someone other than Marvel’s Victor von Doom.
And tell me, did the dinosaur do anything? In DKSB, its a holographic image designed to scare off intruders, Superman in this case. Man, I knew i saw a dinosaur in that playset! Man, i would have loved that as a kid! Plus, the fact that he really has a dinosaur in his cave puts Bats up several notches in my book!
It was originally an ordinary animatronic figure, converted to a homicidal weapon.
A rogue theme park operator created it.
Yes, there was such a story, but that coin was not the one in the Batcave. Here’s a look at the cover of the Two-Face episode – note “Liberty,” which appeared on the Liberty Dollar, not the penny.
