Um… No, why don’t you formulate an actual debate?
George W. Bush knows what’s best for the world. Terrorism is the biggest single threat to freedom in the world. It must be vanquished. So what if some people’s civil liberties are violated. So what if we have to decimate lessor countries. We have to do something, anything. Things are desperate!?
Who decides that?
Tell me you don’t really believe that.
Another point to consider…let’s say that the war mongers do achieve their so called goal of eradicating terrorism…do you really believe they would give up the power the patriot act gives them?
The “Patriot” Act allows for the government to lable any legal U.S. citizen an enemy combatant, not have to prove it. Try you in a secret military tribunal without giving you access to legal council, imprision you, and execute you.
There is at least one U.S. Citizen currnetly being held, without council or charges held against him. Maybe he has been executed by now I don’t know. They can do that if they feel like it without telling anyone. His name is (forgive the misspelling) Joseph Padea. I tried to google his name but couldn’t get anything to come up.
The point is the federal government has the power and ability to do this to any one at any time without accountability.
This isn’t just a Democrat vs. Republican thing. Representative Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) has been an outspoken opponent of extending the sunset clause for the act. “Over my dead body,” he said as I recall.

His name is Joseph Padilla.
Erm, how about this link instead?

Also, hell yes the Patriot Act scares me. What scares me more is the “I don’t care, I’m not a terrorist” attitude that seems to sum up the majority of my fellow countrymen.
It’s scary how easy our own government can take freedoms from us that they claim lives to preserve.
Sick, sick.
Why have rights and freedoms if Pappy Bush can provide and protect you ? Why let the terrorists destroy Israel… I mean the US just to protect your liberties ? The Dear Leader Bush will guide us and therefore you shall not need to fear or think.
Please report your ID number and we will direct you to a good Fox indoctrination center.
1984 Sarcasm Mode off…
After the CIA spy leak its proven that parts of the Bush administration are willing to resort to attacking individuals that oppose their agenda. Soon they will have acess to even more means of digging dirty stuff on US citizens that openly oppose Bush. Or do you think that people who broke secrecy laws wouldn’t have the courage to misuse surveillance and lack of liberties ?
Admittedly, it’s hard to tell in a forum such as this one, but how anybody could make the statement above, with an apprently straight face, is beyond comprehension.
Are the conservatives so deluded that they actually believe their own propaganda? I’ve been assuming that informed, intelligent conservatives know that G.B.Bush, in the words of Wesley Clark (a 4-star general and former NATO commander) is a “miserable failure” as a president, but that they stand behind him for the sake of their ideology.
Are you telling me you actually trust this guy!!!
Knorf
Under the lovely methamphetamine bill HR 2987 and its Senate counterpart S. 486, that particular requirement was already null and void.
The ‘meth bill’ allowed unannounced black-bag (as in they could copy computer files, hard drives, and plant monitoring devices without ever notifying you that your home was searched) searches, and the confiscation of your property to prosecute you for drug offenses.
At least, unlike the ‘meth bill’, the USAPA has an automatic sunset provision.
Well, we do. (The USA)
Of course, if one was an Al-Qaeda member, then they would probably disagree.
The day you see me strap on 45 lbs. of explosives, mixed with rusty nails, and you see me apply protective materials inorder to protect my penis area (don’t know why some do this - perhaps it is for all those young virgins they’re promised) , then I will admit that I am a terrorist.
It definately would, if I was in the US. I’ll just stay in Canada and munch on my french toast, thank you.
So why does Bush want to take our liberties away?
Talk about conspiracy theories. The feds just want to turn the U.S. into a fascist state!?!? Brother! Tell me you don’t really believe that.
If you don’t have anything to hide, you shouldn’t worry about it.
These are grave times. Can you say 9-11?
No, Ashcroft & Co. decide.
Since they claim drug sales finance terrorists, they might decide the kid who buys a lid is a terrorist. Maybe watching foreign TV on my satellite receiver is terrorist activity. War protestors support terrorists and are therefore terrorists themselves. Perhaps voting against the President hurts the war on terrorism and those people are terrorists.
That’s ridiculous. You have no idea what they want to find.
Mr. Ashcroft says I have nothing to worry about. Doubleplusgood, no?
I never said that I agreed with everything the administration does. The drug link and terrorism is just retarded. Marijuana is not exactly uncommon amongst tens of millions of Americans.
Yes, Daisy Cutter, but you failed to address the point that Mr. Ashcroft might say that a vote against the President is a Terrorist act.
Reading about the Patriot Act always makes me think of Catch 22 and the scenes where Clevinger and the Chaplain are being interrogated.
I realize that it’s not quite the same situation, but the government has been looking less and less benevolent lately, and yet the citizens want to give them even more power over our daily lives. I’m all in favor of the government trying to improve the lives of it’s citizens, but the patriot act doesn’t seem like something meant to protect us; it seems like it’s meant to make sure we’re kept under control.
If they dislike what you do, they can twist the patriot act from the guys who crashed the planes to you.
Suppose Bill Clinton were president again, might he decide that listening to the drug abusing Rush Limbaugh supported terrorism? They make money off drug sales. He could send you to Guantanamo to live behind a chain link fence with a toothbrush for as long as it pleased him.
