In radio and tv station names, does the W for stations in the East stand for Westinghouse? (WABC)

Does the K stand for anything on radio and tv stations in the West? (KABC)

I thought the answer to this question was somewhere in the Straight Dope, but every time I’ve tried to go look it up, it isn’t there.
