> For it to be completely analogous, we’d need to swap Aunt Jemima (a fictional character) for a real person like Harriet Tubman or Sojourner Truth. But either way, I agree that the name-calling would be “wronger”. For one thing, what did Pocahontas do to deserve having her name turned into a slur?

I suspect that 99% of his audience has a view of Pochantas which is entirely fictional. Not to mention that Pocohantas had nothing to do with American Indians in Oklahoma, and Trump using that word is like call a guy who falsely claims to be Italian Olaf.

Why not? The entire story about her saving John Smith’s life was fiction right from the get-go.

:dubious: You don’t quite understand how athletic competitions work, do you? To take another, far less illustrious example, I once won a trophy in a tennis tournament for middle schoolers. I no longer qualify for the entrance requirements for such an event, but I’m not giving back my trophy, and nobody expects me to.

Back in the “illustrious” category, Olympic athletes who flee their native countries and become citizens of other countries instead aren’t expected to give their medals back, either.
And back on topic: The weirdest thing about Trump and the “Pocahontas” insult is that you would think that allegations of misrepresenting one’s record would be the **last** topic that Trump would want to bring up, on the principle that people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. And Trump’s glass house is absolutely yuuuuge! It’s the biggest, classiest, most fabulous glass house ever.

Well, it’s lucky that at least the “Left” retains the capacity to be infuriated at unrelenting malevolent fabrication completely bereft of logical and evidentiary support, as opposed to most of the Right, who appear to be scrambling over each other for a place in the queue to kiss the fabricator’s ass.

As for “impotent”, well, I guess we’ll see in November. If it works out like I hope, I think you’ll owe us non-Republicans somewhat of a debt of gratitude for saving you from a Trump Administration while you were busy sneering at us for finding his unscrupulous malice and incompetence infuriating.

Yes, I know. Which is why I say he’ll owe non-Republicans a debt of gratitude, since it will be the non-Republicans, electorally speaking, who will actually have saved his condescending ass from the Trump Presidency that he doesn’t want. His fellow Republicans are not going to be the ones keeping Trump out of the Oval Office.

If **Bricker** actually **did** want Trump elected, on the other hand, I would not expect him to feel any gratitude to liberals for having prevented it, if we do manage to prevent it.

Which events do androgen-insensitive XY people compete in? How about intersex people?

When people like you talk about gender, you incorrectly believe you’re talking about categories that are as immutably separate as, say, pine trees and oysters. In reality, though, the man/woman distinction is more like that between, say, French and Belgians: they are officially different categories and there are many recognized aggregate differences between them, but there are enough similarities and overlaps that they don’t divide neatly into two innately and incontrovertibly separate groups.

And unfavorable views toward Mr. Trump among Republican voters have plummeted 15 percentage points since last month; 21 percent now express an unfavorable view of him, down from 36 percent in April.

I mean, yeah, I respect **Bricker** for having the sense and principles to cross party lines in order to resist the political ascendancy of an incompetent incoherent demagogic reality-TV clown, even if the alternative is a run-of-the-mill (though basically experienced and able) hawkish center-right Democrat. But most of his fellow Republicans appear perfectly willing to throw their support behind the reality-TV clown as long as he self-identifies as Republican.

Not your fault–people don’t agree on the spelling. There’s Sakajawea and Sakakawea–the latter being the official spelling in North Dakota.

Can’t say that we know that from where we are sitting. My own guess would be that “most” Republicans are appalled at what has befallen them. But the elected Republicans are in a bind, they have to figure out where their people are going, and firmly support whatever it is. Will they get more votes by being a “traditional” Republican? Or putting on the red nose and get on the bus?

It is a nasty dilemma, and if I were a better person, I might very well feel badly for them. Someday I might _be_ such a person, but there is no reason to rush things.

The Donald wisely realizes that rational discourse is the most effective technique only when the audience is strictly rational. Since humans are far from strictly rational it’s foolish to restrict one’s rhetoric.

Sounds like “their people” have largely made their choice. According to the article I linked to, it’s the party elites who are still resisting Trumpmania, more than the voters.
