Does Weird Al get much airplay?

Weird Al has had three singles break the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 over his career. 1984 with “Eat It”, at number 12. 1992 with “Smells like Nirvana” which peaked at 35, and 2006 with “White and Nerdy” which saw his only top 10 appearance, at 9.

You can check his entry on Billboard for more information.

Enjoy,
Steven

Wha’ huh? I just borrowed my son’s White and Nerdy hoodie last week…

Dontcha know that if the song hasn’t been in the Top 40 in the last 6 months, it is old and busted. And that 6 month expiration is stretching it. I’m not even exaggerating.

Hallboy (age 17) is into Weird Al and has been for many years. No clue how he got hooked on him, but it wasn’t through regular radio airplay. And it wasn’t because he was played at home.

A couple of years ago, Weird Al went on tour and came through our town, so I bought Hallboy tickets. (One for him, one for me–yeah, Weird Al concert with his MOM. Listen, if the kid wasn’t traumatized by Weird Al, seeing Weird Al with his Mom wasn’t going to do him in.) Anyway, it wasn’t a huge venue (maybe 1,000 or so?) and the concert wasn’t well packed (3/4 full), but Weird Al gave a good show.

Afterwards, as we were leaving, we drove past Weird Al’s parked tour bus, and when I pulled over, Hallboy jumped out of the car, ran over to the bus and touched it. Corny, yeah (for cryin’ out loud, we’d just been to a Weird Al concert!), but it’s something that Hallboy will still bring up with a wistful tone. “Remember when I touched Weird Al’s bus?”

How is King of Suede is sixth biggest hit?! Ahead of Fat, even! That seems so odd…there are a LOT more of his songs I would have guessed were bigger hits than that.

Seriously. King of Suede? That’s the kind of song that should only be popular with the French.
