Mine doesn’t have a ring+vibrate setting which is unfortunate as that can be useful if you’re somewhere noisy - one or the other would surely catch my attention. I have it on ring unless I’m at the movies or something. Since I don’t carry it on my person (that’s what purses are for), I wouldn’t know it was ringing, otherwise. ---

My phone is always set to vibrate only, there is no real reason for this other than habit. As for the ringer (if you so desire), as long as you’re not in a lecture/movie/other inappropriate place i see no problem with it. ---

I have it set to ring for phone calls, vibrate for text messages. And I have Sallie Mae set to silent. I’ll have your payment when I get paid, darn it. ---

My phone almost never leaves my car, so it’s set to ring. We’ve still got a land line at the house. ---

I keep it on vibrate most of the time because I hate the ring sounds (all of them) and I don’t like to annoy other people in addition to annoying myself. Unfortunately even if the phone is in the holster clipped to my waist I don’t feel the vibes and it’s apparently impossible for me to locate and answer it when it’s in my purse, so I miss pretty much every call I get. ---

Ring when not at work, vibrate at work. Though my kids’ schools have my office number, it’s been my experience that they often try the cell first, so that way I can catch those calls if needed. The newest person in my office has her cell on SUPEROMGLOUDANNOYING ring tine, and gets about 4 calls an hour on it. :rolleyes: ---

I generally set it to ring unless I’m at the movies or somewhere a ring would be obtrusive, because otherwise I hallucinate phantom vibrations all day. I did pick the least obnoxiuos ringtone I could find though, and set it to fairly low volume. ---

I does set my cellphone to vibrate, 95% of the time. The other times, I does set my cellphone to ring. I had a business that failed once and I does grew to hate the sound of my cell phone. ---

My cellphone is on vibrate 95% of the time, the only time the ringer is audible is if I’m expecting a call, and since only four people know my number, but also know that I hate phones and not to call unless it’s an emergency, the phone never rings that said, I usually rotate between a few ringtones a clip of Bender saying “Bite my shiny metal ass!” the sound of the TARDIS materiaizing the startup chime of a Powermac G4 series the startup chime of a Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh [Previous page](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/does-you-set-your-cellphone-to-ring-or-vibrate/475169.md?page=2)
