Yes, aka lockjaw. Us kids were warned time & again to always/never do this or that or you’ll get tet’nis and your jaw will lock up something terrible and you need 49 agonizing shots in your stomach.
But cuts on rusty metal = tetanus.
This or that might be climb a tree/fence/WW2 artillery display piece, wear shoes outside, be careful in the attic, poke the dead roadkill, throw vacuum tubes at your brother.
Sincerely sorry this happened to your grandkid, and hope all is well soon.
I’ve always had goofy friendly goldens and now a goldendoodle, but I HATED it when we moved to a new house and I saw the neighbor kid reaching through our fence to pet our dog. More than once, I’ve thought I installed fences more to protect my dogs (and us) from others, rather than the other way around. Sure, I KNOW my mutts are friendly, but I do not completely trust ANY dog - especially when I am not present. Yeah, dogs can be an “attractive nuisance,” but as a dog owner, it can kinda suck to have your dog restrained behind a fence, yet you are liable b/c you failed to make it IMPOSSIBLE for someone to reach over/thru the fence.
How old is your grandkid? Do you expect a lesson will be in the offing re: petting strange dogs?
