> David Boreanaz didn’t figure out how to act until some time in the second season of _Angel_.

Now that’s a solid rebuttal. He really was poor, and Angel ended up being my favorite Whedon show.

> Since they went back and shot the first episode later, it’s possible that she’d already played the entire first season through before doing this one episode.

Based on my reading of the links in post 125, I think this episode was the second one they ever shot. Seems that they shot a pilot, decided it didn’t work, shut down production for two weeks to rewrite it as the episode we just saw, then shot that.

> Fox ordered 13 episodes before even seeing a pilot episode, but once the first episode was completed, Whedon explained that neither he nor the network was completely thrilled with it.
> […]
> “The idea to do a new first episode wasn’t the network’s. It was mine,” Whedon continued. “I understood their consternation, and saw the gap between my style and their expectations, and I suggested I shoot a new ep and make the one I’d shot the second. It isn’t going to be buried, like the pilot of Firefly.”

> I might have to put my distaste for Eliza Dushku on hold - I think part of my thinking of her as a terrible actress has a lot to do with not being able to get the picture of her saying things like, “Five by five, B.” out of my head. I will attempt to judge her acting in this show on its own merits.

Wow am I dense. I never really pay attention to the names of actors or actresses so I was sitting there thinking “Huh she looks kinda like faith sometimes…” during the show and never put two and two together.

Wow, I guess I’m way off then. I thought this was the very\* last \*thing they shot.

Am I wrong then?

> Should have gave the show to Glau. I can’t get enough of her. 🙂

I can’t tell Glau and Dushku apart- Joss clearly has a “thing” for that sort of sulky, pouty, slim, dark brunettes.

And, if a company could invent a machine that would clear memories and input skills and a personality, they coudl sell it to the gov’t for billions and billions, far more than renting out what amounts to a super-high-class-GFE-callgirl for a weekend.

And, clearly the Dollhouse folks have to get the word of by word-of-mouth, to a lot of mouths, thus the Gov’t knows full well what’s going on.

> When _Firefly_ came out, the bellyaching and comments about supposed lack of originality and poor acting were almost identical. Comically so, actually. And yet somehow many, many people came around regardless, and now _Firefly_ is practicality a classic, and widely regarded as some of the best entertainment ever available on TV. Rightly so, in my opinion.

It was good, but not great. True, FanBoys think it is beyond great, but note that all this greatness couldn’t keep it on TV, and the movie just did OK, no thoughts of making a sequel.

> Isn’t this premise really just an excuse for a hot young woman to have a ridiculously implausible array of skills? An episode calls for her to ballroom-dance her way across the room, kung-fu fight her way past ten guards, jimmy the ten-ton safe, use the top-secret computer software within to hack a database… and how did she accumulate this impressive variety of skills, each of which takes years to master? They were programmed into her that week.
> One could argue it’s a metaphor for acting, I guess.

Joss has said that he got the idea while having lunch with Eliza. She said something on the order of “Acting is pretty tough… I have to change who I am and what I know for every part, and what I did last week doesn’t have anything to do with what I do this week; every director gets to completely recreate me as a person.”
