Sanewashing in action…

Trump: “Disgusting illegal alien who was let into the United States by Kamala and her lax law-- she, they, every one of my killer – we had the, she had the, he had the, he would’ve never been able to get in. She stopped every single one of them”

The media: " Trump addressed Harris’ remarks at the border, accusing her of lying about promises she made. “She’s been there almost four years. Why didn’t you do anything,” he asked."

Trump has decent support among Latinos, which should astonish me, but doesn’t. Harris’ campaign needs to contact more a lot more people.

A guest expert on a 538 podcast a couple years ago explained it well: many Latinos these days live in small towns and even rural areas of states like North Carolina and Wisconsin. They’ve absorbed their cultural milieu. They hang out in bars that show Fox News, drive pickups, and generally live the life of a white Trumpy dipshit. It makes sense that many of them would take on that identity (but still respond to pollsters as “Latino” or “Hispanic”).

I don’t necessarily mean to paint with a broad brush, but around here at least, the vast majority of Latinos are Catholic. And that means they are also anti-abortion.

Yes, that’s a factor as well. And that many tend to be “conservative” in the “pro-family-value” sense (meaning, favoring in theory if not in practice a traditional, patriarchal family structure, including traditional genders). A generalization, for sure, but it does help explain some of the voting patterns.

And specific to Latinos, Catholic and Protestants both:

> Around 6 in 10 Hispanic Protestants and about two-thirds of Hispanic Catholics say abortion should be legal in all or most cases. A similar share think Congress should pass a law guaranteeing access to legal abortions nationwide.

That said I suspect that those who are against Choice are often very against.

Not a scientific poll but many of the Hispanic/latino population I know are very strict on the border. Their feeling is that they had to jump through hoops to get here legally and resent those who come illegally.

There’s anti-abortion and then there’s the _ban all abortions even if it to save the life of the Mother, or rape, etc nonsense._ I have a couple catholic friends, and they dont like abortion, sure, but making a 12 yo raped girl come to full term makes them angry. They also dont have any issue with the morning after pill. But they really do not like 'abortion on demand" as they call it.

They said if the law changed to allow abortion only in the first trimester or for special circumstances, they’d be okay with that.

Overall, what’s the sense of voter enthusiasm on the Republican side? Everyone’s saying that the election will depend on turnout, and for all the hate and fear the right stokes, the fact remains that this is Trump’s third presidential campaign in a row, and I can’t see that affecting turnout positively.

Yep, that does affect a lot of different segments of our demographic (for sure it’s hugely nonhomogeneous). Also, for many of them, as for many of the other Trump supporters, the whole “liberal society” thing is not _really_ what’s great about America, and from their POV a strong country needs a _macho_ leader who keeps and settles scores and puts people in their place. Especially IME many of the immigrant cohort did **not** come here longing for the lofty ideals of liberal democracy. They were thinking about food on the table and their kids not being killed by gangs so they are receptive to messages about an expensive economy and street crime.

From an earlier post:

Legal doesn’t mean withholding moral judgment. I wonder if some of the legal in “most cases” voters dislike seeing pro-choice advertisements, and might blame Harris for pushing too hard.

Then, I read somewhere that Trump’s ads regarding trans women in sports, and sex reassignment surgery for prisoners, will similarly backfire. If you aren’t comfortable with all that, you may therefore be bothered over hearing about it in your living room. Trump would be blamed for bringing it up, even if the voter agrees with DJT on the specific issues.

While technically true, for the vast majority of voters there is no difference. The reason for making it legal or illegal is based on a moral stance. Those who want it legal believe it’s a moral right for women to have bodily autonomy, and those who want it illegal think it’s morally wrong to terminate a pregnancy. While I’m sure exceptions exist, they would be rare. That is why this is such a charged issue for both sides and has been for decades; it’s tied into people’s moral belief systems and is more than just a simple political disagreement.
