Sure, I even read the overtly political threads and forums every so often, though I donā€™t participate in them. Though when you have threads like the one about the new Oumuamua like interstellar visitor I think its not unreasonable to open them believing there arenā€™t going to be politics in them. And for those question how often it happens, fine maybe its not every thread, or even most of them, but its certainly the case that he pops up in places where he really shouldnā€™t. ---

I think it is because the guy is a virtually perfect caricature/epitome of so many different things that are terrifyingly wrong not just with the US, but with all the cultural drift toward ā€¦ that ā€¦ which is trending on the whole planet. I could list them but this is not the forum for it. So he is sort of a shorthand for despair. ---

There arenā€™t any politics as such in that thread. Trump isnā€™t even mentioned by name. However I guess Iā€™m in the minority on this one, I just thought it was worth mentioning as I said its affecting my enjoyment and use of the SDMB and I thought others might be feeling the same way. ---

I kinda look forward to the knee-jerk ā€œItā€™s all Trumpā€™s Fault!ā€ posts. Theyā€™re inevitable when someone is in a dither over weather, politics, climate, acne, continental drift, you name it. We have a game here where, after reading the thread subject, friendly bets are placed on how many posts before Trumpā€™s name appears. The SDMB rarely lets us down. ---

There are all kinds of threads here which are Trump-free, and theyā€™re not hard to find. I think the issue is that Trump is kind of like a metastasizing cancer in the vital organs of the body politic. You can comfort yourself on how well other body parts like your feet are doing, unaffected, but you really should keep an eye on the cancer, because your feet wonā€™t be of much use when youā€™re dead. ---

I thought it was worth bringing up as a lot of people, including regulars seem to be leaving the board and new people donā€™t get a particularly warm welcome and this may be one factor. The SDMB has changed since 2016? Buddy, this board has been constantly changing since 2000, when I joined. If this board has any constant, it is change. But Iā€™m still around, as are many of the old regulars. We grow and adapt and weā€™re in it for the long haul. Because fighting ignorance (and dealing with a few total dipsticks) is an ongoing challenge. ---
