Obama’s branding in 2008 was good branding, brilliantly sold his message and won him the election. Trump’s branding has always been polarizing, even before this election run. Ultimately Trump’s campaign is going to fail, and it will be studied in future marketing and communication courses of the textbook example of why it’s not always true that any publicity is good publicity. What he is good at, is dominating the media cycle, thats a different skill to branding. ---

One of the spectacular examples that has multiple instances in multiple cities is licensing his brand to the construction of ostensibly luxurious condos or condo/hotel complexes bearing the Trump name that are run by local slimeballs as bad or worse than he is. I think there’s at least one in Florida, one in the Caribbean, and one in Toronto that are like that. Lawsuits have been launched against Trump on the basis of all kinds of misrepresentations that revolve around these tactics – I know that some of the individual purchasers of condo units in the Trump Tower in Toronto are currently unable to sell them for even half the original purchase price. You can’t keep up this sort of scam forever. And as for the awesome value of having the Trump name on the building, some city councilors have been trying to have it changed because it’s an embarrassment. As for his own personal image as a successful entrepreneur and straight shooter with no tolerance for bullshit, he didn’t create that image – his ghostwriter Tony Schwartz did, mostly based on fabrications and exaggerations. Trump then blundered into national politics simply to feed his enormous ego and demand for attention, and lucked out when it turned out that a significant segment of the electorate were very disaffected with the _status quo_ and also stupid enough to imagine that this blowhard demagogue cared any more for them than he’s ever cared about the poor schmucks he’s been swindling all his life. So: Donald Trump positives: none that I can think of, seriously. ---

he’s a great marketer. And he has brought the issue of the wisdom of Muslim immigration to the forefront. Problem is the way he initially said it taints his ability to do anything good. He does also somewhat make me feel happy someone is challenging some aspects of feminism. The problem is his economic plans, such as huge tariffs would ruin the economy, as would his plan to deport 12 million Mexican immigrants who did what anyone would do (and also people not likely to bring Islamism), and his general disregard for small-d democracy, not to mention his love of Putin. ---
