Lindsey Graham urges those who have endorsed Trump to rescind their endorsements, calling Trump’s attacks on Judge Curiel “the most un-American thing from a politician since Joe McCarthy”.

Yeah, but calling it “The Race” is problematic, no? How is “The Race” not racist?

Their problem is not his losing Hispanic share, but the Hispanic share getting bigger as those not registered flock to register and to vote. If more same white Republican voters stay home, they are screwed for down ticket races also.

[When it is a poor translation, for one.](http://sdlrla.com/the-name/)

> [@](#):
>
> Many people incorrectly translate the name, “La Raza,” as “the race.” While it is true that one meaning of “raza” in Spanish is indeed “race,” in Spanish, as in English and any other language, words can and do have multiple meanings. As noted in several online dictionaries, “La Raza” means “the people” or “the community.”
> Translating our name as “the race” is not only inaccurate, it is factually incorrect. “Hispanic” is an ethnicity, not a race. As anyone who has ever met a Dominican American, Mexican American, or Spanish American can attest, Hispanics can be and are members of any and all races.
> The term “La Raza” has its origins in early 20th century Latin American literature and translates into English most closely as “the people” or, according to some scholars, as “the Hispanic people of the New World.” The term was coined by Mexican scholar José Vasconcelos to reflect the fact that the people of Latin America are a mixture of many of the world’s races, cultures, and religions. In contrast, the term “Hispanic” has its origins in the 1970 U.S. Census, and the term “Latino” was officially adopted in 1997 by the U.S. Government in the ethnonym “Hispanic or Latino.”
> Mistranslating “La Raza” to mean “the race” implies that it is a term meant to exclude others. In fact, the full term coined by Vasconcelos, “La Raza Cósmica,” meaning the “cosmic people,” was developed to reflect not purity but the mixture inherent in the Hispanic people. This is an inclusive concept, meaning that Hispanics share with all other peoples of the world a common heritage and destiny.

Well, the conservatives at RedState clearly see Trump as the racist, and the “La Raza” item. Not so much.

> Based on a pretty good amount of evidence, Trump University was a fraud, Trump did lie about the extent of his participation in it, and the people he defrauded should have their day in court. I see no evidence that Curiel has done anything wrong whatsoever in this case, or improper.
>
> Anyway, in addition to Trump’s overtly racist attack on Curiel, in which Trump explicitly said that Curiel cannot be trusted to rule fairly on any case involving Trump or any of his companies solely on the basis of his Mexican heritage, both Trump and certain lazy/dishonest conservative bloggers have attempted to affiliate Curiel with “La Raza.”
>
> What they are attempting to do is associate Curiel with the National Council of La Raza, the radical left-wing and pro-illegal-immigration group that has gained significant notoriety in the news over the years as a group that is both anti-American and open to fomenting violent pro-immigration protests.
>
> Curiel, however, has no affiliation with this group whatsoever. He is a member of La Raza Lawyers of California – aka the Latino Bar Association of California. They have absolutely no affiliation with National Council of La Raza.

As for the attempt at making “la raza” to be problematic, it is mostly problematic all right, but mostly for the ones that also have the vapors when seeing words like “Colored” in the NAACP, that some nuts are abusing of it does not remove the history behind “La Raza.”

Here is Gustavo Arellano from “Ask a Mexican”:

> **[¡Ask a Mexican!](https://www.tucsonweekly.com/tucson/andiexclask-a-mexican/Content?oid=1092000)**
>
> What's with calling yourselves La Raza?

> [@](#):
>
> Betcha they’ve never read the primary source from which “la raza” originated–José Vasconcelos’ 1925 booklet, La Raza Cósmica (The Cosmic Race). Vasconcelos, Mexico’s first secretary of public education, wrote his piece as a reaction to the race thinking of the time, one dominated by adherents of Darwinism and Herbert Spencer’s “survival of the fittest” prism that placed the gabacho above all people. The Mexican intellectual also subscribed to racial stratifications, but whereas others saw unavoidable strife, Vasconcelos imagined something greater. La Raza Cósmica is a classic work of the prophetic tradition, one in which Vasconcelos predicted humanity would evolve into a fifth race, free of the negative attributes each racial group possessed, to create a harmonious existence–the cosmic race, la raza cósmica. Crucially, Vasconcelos never stated Mexicans were that race, but rather wrote that Latin America’s legacy of mestizaje posited “Ibero-Americans” as prime acolytes to spread the gospel of fusion–not through violence, but “the triumph of fecund love.”
>
> The raza cósmica theory is utopian and even goofy–but it’s ultimately an anti-racist dream. Vasconcelos was by no means perfect–he didn’t like ugly people and was too fixated on the superiority of Spanish qualities–but his ideal is one not that removed from that American standby, the melting pot. He even understood the humanity of gabachos–“The exclusion of the Yankee (from la raza cosmic), like the exclusion of any other human type, would be equivalent to an anticipated mutilation, more deadly even than a later cut.”
>
> Needless to say, Vasconcelos’ theory gained fans across Latin America. But it wasn’t until the 1960s Chicano movement that the concept of la raza cósmica gained further followers. Like most things they took from Mexico (food, women, the language), Chicanos corrupted Vasconcelos’ vision, interpreted “la raza” as referring exclusively to Mexicans and forgot the whole brotherhood bit.
>
> “It is true that mestizaje is one of the central concepts of the Vasconcelos essay,” states the introduction to Didier T. Jaén’s excellent translation of La Raza Cósmica, “but, of course, it is also clear that the racial mixture Vasconcelos refers to is much wider, much more encompassing, than what can be understood by the mestizaje of the Mexican or Chicano.”
>
> Like Vasconcelos, the Chicano definition of “la raza” was rooted in its turbulent time. It was during this era that the organization that preceded NCLR incorporated that term into its name in 1972. But over the decades, the cósmica part of la raza was largely dropped, as was the ethnocentrism, and what remained was a benign synonym for Mexicans.
>
> People can disagree with NCLR’s policies, but to classify them as the Tan Klan because of their name is like a prude getting offended over the name of the titmouse. By the way: Don’t paint me as an NCLR apologist. I think the organization’s president, Janet Murguia, is stupid for trying to get right-wing pundits off the air, mostly because they’re so easy to prove wrong. Besides, the only raza that truly matters is mine: the Nerd race. Por mis Nerds todo; fuera de mis Nerds, nada.

One warning: He is offensive to many conservatives that continue to be ignorant in the rest of the article.

Play with [that 538 app](http://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2016-swing-the-election/) … few states flip even if Hispanic turnout and share both increase significantly and the impact can be more than offset if in return non-college educated White turnout and share increases on the other side.

Some news websites put the results from both primaries [side by side](http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2016-election/primaries/PR) on their live results pages, and I think people aren’t noticing the different dates. It also happened after the Kentucky Democratic Primary.

😕 Is it racist for Hispanics to call each other Hispanic?

IIRC, in other threads you’ve defended whites from well-founded charges of “racism.” Now you accuse Hispanics of “racism” just for self-identifying? 😕 Double-standard much?

Yeah, it was the date. But seriously, as a matter of principle, there have been a bunch of hard-left pseudojournalistic blogs popping up lately - OccupyDemocrats, IfYouOnlyNews, AddictingInfo… They seem to be related somehow, and they’re all _garbage_. Their fact-checking is virtually non-existent. Half the times it seems like their “news” is completely made up, and the other half, it’s given the most blatantly dishonest partisan spin I’ve seen on the left since Michael Moore.

Everybody stop citing these guys. Just stop it. Stop sharing them on facebook, stop clicking on the links, stop giving them traffic. Not only are we better than this, but we don’t need to make shit up about our opponents! It’s DONALD FUCKIN’ TRUMP!
