On a dive trip in Fiji, came back to the boat to find that one of the divers had gotten stung by a lionfish (poisonous spines). Her hand was swollen, and she was doing her best to dip it in vinegar to neutralize the poison. She was obviously miserable and in a lot of pain. Later that evening, I met up with the lady’s husband and asked how she was doing. He said she had been laid out most of the afternoon, still miserable, but the swelling had gone down. I asked how it happened, whether she just put her hand in the wrong place at the wrong time (you mostly see lionfish clinging to rocks/coral - not so much swimming around). And he tells me…“she was petting it”, and that that’s how she likes to enjoy the underwater creatures - by touching them. All my sympathy for the woman disappeared. ---

How do people, even intoxicated ones, think it’s OK to hand feed the bear, get out of the car to photograph the lion, pet the zoo tiger, caress the poisonfish, or kiss the rattlesnake? ---

OK, everyone, follow this through - he was leaning in to kiss the rattlesnake and was bitten on the _tongue_. Not the lip, but the tongue. He was trying to French kiss a rattlesnake - on the first date! People these days got no respect… ---

My father told the story that a colleague of his in some tropical country returned home one evening to the sight of his young child spoonfeeding ice cream to a cobra. Every time the snake got too close the child would bop the cobra on the head with the spoon! ---

I wish I’d kept this picture, but a while back I found an ad in a magazine for some tropical holiday resort, and one of the photos was a -clearly 'shopped- picture of a woman swimming underwater, with goggles and a big happy grin, cupping a lionfish in her hands. 😃 ---
