No sitting close to the TV, and yes unplug everything during a thunderstorm. No bathing, talking on the phone or sitting close to a window during a thunderstorm either. Also that noise attracts lightening so you have to be quiet during a storm. As a pet sitter I hate when people turn off the pumps for their wells, but I advise all my clients to turn off the water to their washing machines. If it’s winter turn off the outside faucets too. I’ve dealt with way more than my share of flooded basements. ---

I was browsing through some old issues of TV Guide lately. In one 1968 issue, it discussed congressional testimony about the hazards of X-rays from color TVs. It mentioned some medical experts advised sitting no more than 6 feet from the TV. So our parents actually were just repeating that advice.
