Perhaps some of our older dopers would like to probe the generation gap a bit; all are welcome though. Should you not have seen the other thread, the challenge is to ask trivia questions just barely easy enough for me to answer. No points for too easy, 1 point for challenging but correct, -1 point for wrong or don’t know. Keep your own score, Doper’s honor.

1. President Ronald Reagan quoted a famous line from poet and airman John Gillespie Magee, Jr in a speech saying some people had, “slipped the surly bonds of Earth.” To whom was Reagan referring to and what event spurred his speech?

2. The Soviet Union fought a war against the Mujaheddin in what country?

3. In the TV show Cheers, where did bar regular Cliff Clavin work?

A Texas man? Boxers, of course. This answer assumes that you ask the question in general, not in a right-now sense. You may well be wearing neither at the moment.

He was referring to astronauts in the wake of the Challenger disaster.

In Afganistan.

Was that Ratzenberger? At the post office.

I’m not sure. I was going to say Carter until I saw your next question. So I’ll say Ford?

Carter.

Mikhail Gorbachev.

I don’t know the first song, but I know the second well. Mark Cohn (sp?)

Osbourne. Rhyming masses with masses is just wrong, BTW.

For sure or for show.

For sure as well, I’m pretty sure.

The undercover cop was killed.

What’s up, buddy?

a 1/2 point for Marc Cohn. He wrote and sang Walking in Memphis. Cher covered it and had a huge hit.

Was the Miners’ Strike before or after the Falklands War?

Before he was Morse, John Thaw starred as who in which iconic TV series?

What happened to the President’s brain in which TV comedy series?

Hmm. British history isn’t going to be a strong suit for me. I know the Falklands war was early 80’s. I vaguely recall several miners strikes in England. Based entirely on what I remember of The Full Monty, I’ll say after.

Neither Morse nor John Thaw mean a thing to me. So, based entirely on iconic TV series, was he one of the many Doctors Who?

That question has two blanks, no fair. X happened to the president’s brain on Y TV show. Throw me a bone, eh?

On edit, I’ve read Thaw’s bio, and I have never heard of any of the programs he acted in. Could one of them truly be iconic?

For sure a VP’s wife. I think Tipper Gore.

He was Regan in the Sweeney. The iconic 1970s British cop drama. I’m really surprised neither The Sweeney nor Morse made it to America.

Never mind. Just read up on [Spitting Image](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spitting_Image) and hunt down a few Youtube vids. They’re still screamingly funny.

Same question I asked on the other thread.

Name the following movies that won an Oscar for Best Picture:

1. Tim Hulce played Mozart
2. Anthony Hopkins playing a serial killer
3. Charlie Sheen playing a soldier in Vietnam
4. Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep playing a divorced couple
5. Sylvester Stallone playing a boxer
