[QUOTE=OtakuLoki]

1. The first Presidential election that the current Republican party won, I think, was Lincoln’s election in 1860.

2. I think that’s Jackson.

3. I think this is William Henry Harrison.

4. I’ve never heard of this. I’m going to guess it was Lincoln, just because he certainly seems to have made political capital out of telling such stories on himself.
[/QUOTE]

5. Yes.

6. Yes.

7. Correct.

8. That would be James Madison, who was living in the White House during the war of 1812 when a fire was set to the White House. He was having dinner when he had to be evacuated to the chicken coop.

That puts me at +7.

1. It was called Doomsday. If it had a name of its own, I’ve never heard about it.

2. Venti, Grande, and Longi?

3. Pacific Avenue, North Carolina Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue?

4. Family Spirit That Always Messes Everything Up? (As opposed to The Great Stone Dragon who was supposed to go with Mulan.) I’m already annoyed I can’t remember this. 😉

5. Football. (Electronic version mostly.)

+3 for Doomsday
+3 for Monopoly
-2 for Starbucks. It’s Tall, Grande, Venti
-3 for Mulan reference. His name is Mushu

I had 14, and this gives me 3 more. I’m at 17!

I’m posting this here because I don’t want to top the older thread. **cmyk** had invited me to start a “Stump the girl”\* thread because I was technically the loser but my final score wasn’t up when he ended the game. I considered it but I have a headache and don’t really want to do any thinking, also I just a got a new Discworld book from Amazon and I’d like to start reading it. 🙂
So it’s all OtakuLoki.

\*[sub]btw, thanks for remembering the correct gender.[/sub]

Oh, and so this won’t all be a hijack;

1. Diff: 1; Who is the author of the Discworld book series? (Anywhere else the difficulty would be higher but I expect a Doper to at least have a passing knowledge through osmosis)

2. Diff: 2; What is osmosis?

3. Diff: 1; Name the author who co-authored the novel _Good Omens_ with the author from question 1.

**Sternvogel** , it is my sad duty to inform you that you’ve managed a clean sweep, here. I have no idea for any of these people. I think I’ve seen the name of Farnsworth before, and Czolgosz looks familiar, somehow, but the answers you’re going to see here are completely random.

Leon Czolgosz - was he part of Baron von Steuppen’s entourage?
Sir Rowland Hill - The recluse who owned the eponymic house from The Haunting of Hill House
Julius Nyerere - A prominent jazz figure
Philo Farnsworth - A famous bookseller
Alexander Winton - One of the House of Winton, from the Honor Harrington books.

Wow, long post. I’ll try not to drop any questions - if I do, please don’t hesitate to call me on them.

1. Unit conversions: How many centimeters are in an inch? There are 2.5 cm/in
How many liters are in a gallon? There are 4 l/gal
How many fluid ounces are in a quart? There are 32 oz/qt
How many kilometers are in a mile? There are 1.5 km/mi
How many pounds (of mass) are in a kilogram? There are 2 lbm/kg
How many feet are in a meter? There are 3 ft/m

Note, per your instructions, the answers have been rounded to the nearest half unit.

1. What single letter completes the name of this anime series “Dragon Ball \_”?

Z, giving us Dragon Ball Z.

(I think, given that my name here on the board includes the word Otaku, meaning a fan of anime in general, you may have over-rated the point value of this question, for me. After all, I know you’ve taken your SN from a bishonen revolutionary hotelier. 😉 )

1. In Microsoft Internet Explorer, what does the command CTRL-D do?

I’m not sure. I think it bookmarks the current web page, but I won’t swear to it.

1. Internet Abbreviations: YMMV - Your Mileage May Vary
LOL - Laughing Out Loud
IANA followed by another letter, often L or D. - I Am Not A Lawyer, or Doctor, or any other specialized profession that may be appropriate to the discussion at hand.
BRB - (I’ll) Be Right Back
FWIW - For What It’s Worth

2. Match the three colored plugs of a standard composite video cable to the signals they carry.

Yellow - Video
White - left audio signal
Red -right audio signal

What, you mean they don’t just mean the yellow plug goes into the yellow hole?

1. In mythology, what was Achilles’ one weak point?

His heel, or tendon at his heel.

1. What was the source of Achilles’ invulnerability?

His mother dipped him into the river Styx. It was because she held onto him by his heel that his one weak point was there.

1. In order to transform into the superhero Captain Marvel, Billy Batson shouts what 6-letter word?

Shazam!

1. Each letter in the previous word stands for the name a mythical benefactor from whom Captain Marvel draws power. Name each of these benefactors.
Hint: In order, they provide Wisdom, Strength, Stamina, Power, Courage and Speed.

This one is pure guesswork. I think you’re going to be losing some points on this, sorry.

S - Solomon
H - Hercules
A - Ares
Z - Zeus
A - Athena
M - Mercury

I think that got all the questions.

[QUOTE=OtakuLoki]
The answers to that giant string of questions I threw out.
[/QUOTE]
Well played. You are correct on all counts except the two A’s in Shazam. They represent the Stamina of **A** tlas and the Courage of the aforementioned **A** chilles.

As for the Dragon Ball question, I figured difficulty based on the titular “guy with average knowledge” with nary a thought to your personal qualifications. I will claim no points from that one as 4 is definitely too much to score on that question when pitched to a self-proclaimed otaku.

In the future, I shall try to bear such things in mind (oh and write shorter posts.)

Thus, as I calculate (hopefully correctly) this adds 21 points, for a total of 44.

Good grief! I mention I’m an Otaku, and now you’re really coming after that. 😉 I hate to admit this, but it wasn’t until this summer that I finally saw Cowboy Bebop.

1. Yohko Kano

2. A Chinese-style crime family. And for the life of me I can’t recall the name of it.

3. USSP - the fuzz, in other words.

4. Spike flies The Swordfish. I can’t recall what Faye flies, I suspect it’s something suitably piratical. I’m going to go with The Merry Widow, but that’s just an attempt to use my magic asshole.

5. Ein is an enhanced Corgi.

Yay! I get to be green! I have 4. Osmosis should probably include something about going from a high concentration to lower concentration to maintain equilibrium but I think that’s close enough.

[del]I did say it was grossly simplified.[/del] I should have said it was grossly oversimplified. 😉 Remember you can get osmotic crossings between equal concentrations across the membrane. Forex, if you take a solution of Sodium Chloride on one side of the membrane, and put some Potassium Chloride on the other, at the same osmotic concentration, you will get K[sup]+[/sup] on the Sodium side, and Na[sup]+[/sup] on the Potassium side even though both sides of the membrane were in osmotic equilibrium.
