Over the past few years, we’ve seen any number of stories about the idiotic attempts by public schools to stifle or neuter observance of Halloween. However, [the method allegedly employed by this teacher in Tulsa](http://2worksforyou.com/news/stories/underwear.shtml) easily tops them all. I feel sorry for the kid since the punishment seems deliberately based upon the common nightmare about being naked in class. The fact that the name of the school where this happened is Walt Disney Elementary is also a nice touch. ---

For some reason this story really, really pisses me off. Maybe because I’ve got kids of my own in elementary school. Maybe because I grew up in Tulsa, back before the religious nutters started crapping on everything. I can remember me and my sisters wearing our Halloween costumes to school. I think the teacher should be disciplined by requiring her to stand all day in front of the school stripped to her underwear. That should give her ample time to reflect on the appropriateness of humiliating a five-year-old in such a manner. Poor kid was probably really proud of his costume too … . :mad: ---

If that was my kid I’d be pretty pissed off and I’d be howling for that teachers ass in a sling. The school has a policy that ‘forbids costumes’…so what does this dumb ass teacher do? Makes the kid strip to his underwear?? “Crystal Harris says her 5-year old son was forced to take off his costume, and go through the entire school day with only his underwear on.” I’m sorry, but this teacher should be fired just because she is fucking stupid…and whoever is running that school needs to be fired as well. I hope this story is a woosh because if its not…well, lets just say the Halloween costumes have nothing on the teachers at that school for being scary… :mad: -XT ---

Wouldn’t it have been easier to either call the kids parents and have them come get him (or bring him a change of clothes), or if that wasn’t possible simply keep him in the principals office (WITH his costume on) for the remainder of the day? I mean, if they had to be assholes about it (I suppose though its debatable if shools should have such policies in the first place) couldn’t they at least be sane assholes? Instead the teacher orders a 5 year old to strip to his underwear and then finish out the school day in that fashion. This strikes me as either vindictive as hell on the part of the teacher (‘I’m going to show THIS little bastard who is the boss here!’) or, well…‘perhaps the teacher just likes to see little boys in their underwear’ as you said. -XT ---

I don’t know what schools in the US do, but my son’s elementary school in Canada had a school nurse with spare clothes for when little kids had ‘accidents’. So what the fuck, teacher-lady? ---

I guess the precedent has been set in this school that underwear-only is acceptable attire for a student throughout the school day. ---

I know my daughter’s school had a policy that required every kid up through 2nd grade to keep an extra set of clothes in their cubby. Even though there were some parents who were slackers, there was always another kid who had some. In all the schools I subbed in, there were similar policies, plus the office usualy had some for older kids for either girls who got their period early or a muddy day outside or any number of things. I think my sisters kids also had much the same thing, so did we for that matter. I can’t imagine anyone running a first grade classroom without some kind of contingency. This woman strikes me as someone who should not really deal with children. Perhaps she would be better as a prison guard or some such… Oh wait, that is a bad idea. ---

I don’t have any children of my own, but for some reason this spoke to me as something so heinous that I can’t imagine this teacher won’t face strict disciplinary action. However, just to do my small part to voice that outrage, it was a simple matter to Google the school and get the principal’s email. Just wanted to share that information to those who might feel or want to do the same. 🙂 ---

Irecall that Disney had an ad agency/animation group in the Midwest, prior to Hitting It Big. That proto-firm went bust. It may have been in that state, for all I know. ---
