Mr. Rilch and Friend are downstairs, watching the Steelers game. Just when they announced the overtime, the phone rings. Mr. Rilch has a policy he acquired from “Drabble”. In a strip a few years ago, Drabble’s dad (Ralph) let the phone ring unanswered, claiming, “I don’t want to talk to anyone who doesn’t know I’m watching wrestling right now!” I checked the caller ID, just in case it was MIL or Friend Down South (Mr. Rilch would take those calls, because they would be wanting to discuss the game). It’s a number I don’t recognize, so I let the answering machine take over. “Hey, what’s happn’in’, JTL…This is Boss, just hanging’ out, wonderin’ what you’re up to. Gimme a call…” This was not said in irony! Has he never noticed Mr. Rilch’s Steelers cap, Steelers shirts, Steelers bumber sticker on his briefcase, and so forth? Has he never listened all the times Mr. Rilch talked about this game or that game? OMG, Friend just roared with such force my eardrum vibrated. Anyway, I just don’t know how Boss can be so oblivious. Remind me to call **him** some time during a crucial Laker game… ---

I live in the sweaty armpit of Packer country – yet I do not give one flying flip about when the Packer game is on, or who won the Packer game, or whether the Packers are in the playoffs, or what color Brett Favre’s ear wax is today. I have no idea when or where I might be able to find the Packer game on the TV or radio. Football is a nonentity in my house. For everyone else in the state (apparently), it is a religion. This does not make it my prerogative to suspend my social interactions because “the game” is on. Perhaps Mr. Rilch’s boss feels the same way. (Perhaps he has been tuning Mr. Rilch out.) No judgment on present company, of course – just an observation. ---

I don’t see him tuning Mr. Rilch out. What he is, basically, is clueless sometimes, and this was one of those times. When I posted, I was hyped up about the game (and now the air’s been let out of me… :(). It was just the worst possible time for **anyone** to call, unless it was about the game. The incongruity of “hey, what’s happn’in’, JTL” struck me funny, and I was posting out of excited amusement. **tomndebb** , I can see you don’t live in LA :). Out here, to Laker fans, the ones with Laker flags on their cars (!), **every** game is crucial.
