Trudeau is not out of touch, at least not on everything. His strips about Mike’s daughter Alex have more insight into geek/programmer culture than almost anyone else in the mainstream. ---

He did beer after France lost the Franco-Prussian war (they surrendered, of course) and he wanted to help France out in any way he could…he hit upon the oh-so-clever idea of making French beer better than its German competitor. But you can only have three entities in an Axis, like Germany, Japan and Italy in WW II. ---

Well, sure, called them an Axis - but did they say it had to be \*\*three[/]? If they had found another ally in their cause, would Eisenhower, FDR, Churchill, or whoever need to give them a new name because they had exceeded the limits to be an Axis? ---

Certainly _Doonesbury_ is not as consistently excellent as it was in the 1970s. But he’s still better than most of the drivel that one finds on the comics pages of daily newspapers these days. Plus, he’s still occasionally brilliant. Take the grade-inflation series starting with [this strip](http://www.doonesbury.com/strip/dailydose/index.cfm?uc_full_date=19931220&uc_daction=X), for example, and continued[here](http://www.doonesbury.com/strip/dailydose/index.cfm?uc_full_date=19940306&uc_comic=db&uc_daction=X). ---

I still find _Doonesbury_ occasionally funny but this strip didn’t do it for me. He’d have more of a point if the French didn’t have a governmental entity solely for the purpose of “preserving the French language”- which usually means renaming english words that have become popular in France.
