Dope Server Issues

Well, I’m glad that someone finally decided that a little enlightenment is all that was ever asked for. It seems that with this most recent outage and disabling of the search, Jerry and the board admins have decided to shed at least a little bit of light as to what’s going on behind closed doors.

Jerry, thanks for the explanation of what’s been going on with the board over the past few days. Ed, thanks for the update on the management meetings being held with regard to the board. The rest of the administrative staff, thank you sincerely for not jumping on the “stfu and deal with it, you get a lot for your $15, so take THAT!” bandwagon that many people have come to expect from situations like this.

That said, it’s hard to place blame here. The mods clearly aren’t responsible for this. The administrative staff, not so much, either. Jerry probably has a shit ton of other things on his plate to deal with. Clearly there are some hardware issues to be dealt with, but none of you guys can be expected to pull a server out of your ass. Fortunately, those who do write the checks seem to be (from Ed’s post, at least) finally taking an interest in this place. I won’t hold my breath, but I have to admit, it’s more of an answer than we’ve ever gotten before.

So yeah, carry on. A pitting is well deserved for the performance of the board, and for the poor customer service from the front lines. And yeah, I’m pretty pissed at the lack of search and the ongoing crashes, but I’m sure it’s no picnic for the administration that’s here, on the board, taking the heat.

Jerry and Ed, thanks again for the updates – I hope they keep coming, regardless of their being good or bad. A bunch of us being rightfully pissed on the boards isn’t going to be a blip on the corporate radar, but I trust you both to take our issues, put them into nicer words, and represent us in these upcoming meetings.

I do minimal searching, mainly to find old Cafe Society threads about movies I’ve just seen on DVD, so while the present situation is a shame, it isn’t all that much of a big deal to me for the moment. Ed says in the ATMB thread that he hopes to have more info to tell us by tomorrow or so as to what’s going to happen regarding the server problems. I’ll wait until more information comes from that direction before I decide to be irate or not.

The dope’s been down at least three times a day for me for the past week and a half

Weren’t we told that when the board first went to pay, that it would improve performance?

As for the mods not being at fault, they’re not-for the board performance. But for explanations and customer service? Hell yeah.

It cracked me up this morning to see what happened to my thread. After all, I started the thread to point out the irony of what had happened to Shodan’s thread. It looks like the database decided to play along with the joke.

Daniel

I’m almost certain those assurances were made. I’d search for the exact quote but…well, you know…

This thread is a waste of time inasmuch as it is an attempt to offer suggestions or technical assistance. Such offers have always been turned away with snark, rebuke, or just plain ignoring them. No point doing anything here but venting.

I tried to post “I’m sorry LHoD, I can’t do that” as as reply, but it woudn’t let me.

The last time we needed a new server at work to house two legacy financial databases from companies we had acquired (which are likely bigger and more complex than the SDMB database), we had it 10 days later. Most of that was the time taken to have the server built to our exact specifications and delivered. Three days later, both databases were migrated and available. I’m just sayin’.

I also feel the need to point out that this was done by people who also have a lot of other responsibilities at their job. It was, in fact, a relatively low priority at the time since not even a dozen of my 600 users would need to access the data and not for several months from the time we were doing this. Still, it happened quickly, efficiently, and professionally. Again, I’m just sayin’.

Not having the search function doesn’t really bother me too much, but the board being down just pisses me off to no end. I tend to go through all the forums and open each thread that interests me in a new tab, and just refresh them throughtout the day to read the new replies. After the board crashes and comes back up, refreshing makes every page revert to the first post. Fuck that! You mean I hafta skim back through thirty tabs worth of shit just to find out that nobody posted to them in the past two hours?! Aaaaarrrrgghh!!

Aside from a few spurts of downtime here and there, I would say it has. The last few days have been bad, but for the most part I can generally expect pages to load now, which wasn’t the case right before PtP went in.

That’s what happens when you lose around half of your user base. Now that it’s built back up the server is taking a beating again.

I must also chime in with my frustration. New threads don’t post. Replies don’t show up. Many times the “SDMB is taking too long to respond” to my ISP at home.

I know this is a very popular board, but it seems to me the technology is not keeping up. Searching was one of the perks of being a paying member, and now that’s been taken away from us. Hopefully it will just be for a day or two…if it goes longer, then I must question the value of paying to join.

We want answers. No waffling, answers. I think after all our patience and being asked to suck up a whole bunch of crap, we deserve it.

Hey, WTF happened to the Search button?!

Almost 30,000 posts and you still can’t follow along. Now I know where all the bandwidth is going.

Read the Sticky, Brain. It’s been disabled.

30,000 posts!!? Sheesh, that guy has way too much time on his hands.

I don’t really have anything to add to the conversation right now, but I felt like posting something and, after all, how often does one have the opportunity to do that anymore?

I shudder to think what the board might be like without pay to post.

I tried to post “I see what you did there” but the database ate that too. Well, to be precise, it said “there has been a technical error”, invited me to refresh, and then told me that I’d specified an invalid thread.
