I call my common law spouse “the Beau” because at 41 I’m not crazy about having a “boyfriend” and if I say “partner” it comes across as a same sex relationship. (Nothing wrong with that, but it isn’t a same sex relationship.) I tried for a time to call him Horatio Nelson Muntz to go with Mona Lisa Simpson, but I didn’t like it. My son, I just call my son, sometimes M. I really dislike the DH thing, its like Flylady. Saccharine sweet. Other memes I like, use /dislike eschew but don’t care much about. It is what gives this board its own character. ---

I never said you should use their real names. I said don’t treat your fake name like your real name and pretend it’s also your kid’s name when you could just as easily say “my kid”. Instead of “fakenamelad said a bad word in school today” just say “my son said a bad word in school today”. The former makes lack of a vomit smiley near criminal. The latter sounds like the start of a normal everyday conversation. ---

They’re a lot better than they used to be- a few years ago there seemed to be _heaps_ of in-jokes, references, and things “you had to be there” to get, so I’m glad it’s improved in that respect. Sure, there’s some (and they add flavour to the board and provide a sense of local culture, so to speak), but it’s a good thing IMHO that there aren’t more. ---

I do the “MrWhatsit” and “Whatsit Jr” thing mostly because that makes it instantly clear who I’m talking about without having to constantly type out “my husband” or use stupid abbreviations like DH. I suppose I could use their real names but I don’t really expect people to remember that Keith is my husband and Zeke, Stazi, and Gus are my kids, so I use my board name as shorthand. Didn’t realize it bugs some people but am not likely to change it at this point. ---

I sometimes use “Nicely done” instead but the convention is still worth keeping. ---

There are people on this forum who are capable of making insightful contributions to any conversation. The rest of us are relegated to the status of hangers on, or at best, sidekicks. If we couldn’t say things like; “BooYah!”, “How’s that working out for ya?”, or “That’s what she said” We would be forced to indulge in some more aggressive assholery just to be noticed. So don’t take that away from us.
