Patricia. I was named after my paternal grandmother, who had a son (my father), then two girls. She and her husband (my father’s father) decided that having a boy was too “difficult”, so they dumped him off at his grandparents every opportunity they got, which was often. Apparently (according to my great aunt), my dad showed up on his grandparents door step with the clothing on his back, and that was it. When he was about 15 years old, his mother (Pat) got breast cancer. His father (Pat’s wife–are you following this?) refused to take Pat to get treatment, so my dad drove her back and forth to the hospital for treatments. When he was 16, she died of breast cancer. However, the end result is that I was named after my father’s mom who couldn’t be bothered with her son and dumped him off on relatives every opporuntity she got. ---

Before I got married and began to use my maiden name as a middle name, my middle name was “Tanner.” I hated this. “Tanner” wasn’t even a family name. It was the name of a philosophy professor to whom my father lost a poker bet in 1947. The terms of the bet: the loser’s firstborn child would carry the surname of the winner as a middle name. If my father had been a better poker player, I could have had a nice middle name, like “Ann” or “Elizabeth.” ---

So, where are all the Lynns? When I was in highschool, it seemed that almost half of the girls in my grade had the middle name of Lynn. Don’t know if it was a mid-70s trend, or what. Mine is Michele. ---

Kay. I actually sort of wish it was just the letter “K,” which I think would somehow be cooler. I usually just use the initial, but my first and last names go so well together that I tend to drop it completely if at all possible. ---
