Doper Parents (USA Dopers, Public Schools): Do Your Kids' School Textbooks Contain Anything You Disagree With?

Not a parent, just an uncle. But I was browsing my nephew’s science textbook and came across a page displaying a picture of an astronaut doing a spacewalk, with this caption: “As you get further from the center of the Earth, gravity decreases - until, in outer space, you’re weightless!”

I definitely objected.

I’ve been very happy with the content taught in Chicago Public Schools. Obviously no truck with creationism here. At least at my son’s school, they seem to be making a very conscious effort to embrace multiculturalism, including in the teaching of American history.

I had no complaints about my daughter’s textbooks. And New York does not have religion classes, arguing quite rightly that it’s not a function of the public schools.

Just to make sure: Sophia’s religion classes occured in a Catholic school, not a state school.
