[In this post in a thread about the two most recent Dopers to appear on _Jeopardy!_](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=12011449#post12011449), **KittenKat** brings up the need for a Doper recognition code – something that can be dropped into ordinary conversation in a geek-intensive environment, that won’t stand out much, and that any Doper would pick right up on and give the proper countersign. One possibility discussed in that thread is “Cite?”. Another thought I came up with (and led to me starting this thread) is a two-item list, and see who has a strong urge (repressed or open) to add “3. Hi Opal!” ---

That pretty much happened at the 2005 PA RennDope. IIRC, **danceswithcats** (z’'l) was commenting about posting such-and-such on the Dope. A random person next to us then offered us some weed. Blank stares of non-sequiturness ensued. ---

I’ve gotten weird reactions at Dopefests when looking for the others in the group and asking for “Dopers” Most people seem to be tuned into the **scuba\_ben** meaning. In Boston, we’ve taken to reserving tables at restaurants for Dopefests as the _Friends of Cecil_. Maybe _that_ can be the recognition code. ---

“Are tyou a friend of Cecil’s?” Won’t go worng too often in the USA: according to [http://www.namestatistics.com/](http://www.namestatistics.com/) CECIL is the #214 most common male first name 0.078% of males in the US are named CECIL. Around 95550 US males are named CECIL Don’t know how well it might work in Australia or the UK. You could also just drop “thank Og” into the conversation here and there. (In my head it has a long “o”? Anyone else?) ---

If it’s in a Jeopardy situation, “Hi Opal!” makes sense because people might plausibly say that in that situation. Of course if you are unsure about someones Dopeness, you can shout out to “someone” (i.e. no one) in the distance and if the people next to you don’t twig on you can just pretend that the “person” you were saying “Hi” to wasn’t who you thought they were. But that’s slightly more awkward. ---

I’ll bet Jeopardy contestants are strongly encouraged NOT to say “Hi” to anyone when Alex banters with them during pre-game introductions. It’s not dignified, you know. I may be wrong though, because I rarely see the show. ---

When I first started hanging out around these parts (ten years ago :eek: ), I was a little concerned when I first saw people talking about Dopefests. “I dunno if this is the right kind of board for me,” I thought, “I don’t know if I want to hang around with a bunch of stoners.” Maybe ejaculating something like, “Great Zotti!” would be a tip-off. ---
