Unfortunately, **chowder** is quite possibly – I would say probably – dead. There’s been at least one thread speculating on his sudden disappearance years ago.

No obit that anyone could find. People tried to find a death notice and even to contact the Royal Mail, where he was retired from. No luck. [Here’s the thread on that](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=577752&highlight=chowder).

Thanks for the information on **chowder** , **Siam Sam** , and I do recall that thread from before, but until we know for sure I would rather not attach the \* – just in case he shows back up. 🙂

It might just be a long hiatus he’s taken. It makes me wonder who has taken the longest such break and is still around, or was heard from after such an episode.

I would hope that any definitive word on his passing would go to the _In Memoriam_ thread where it might be considered more _official_.

My 58th birthday was yesterday. November 5, 1955 I always like to say is the answer to the greatest movie trivia question of all time. In the move _Back to the Future_, what day did Doc Brown come up with the idea of the Flux Capacitor, and therefore the date that Marty was sent into the past in DeLorean?
