Has this ever happened here? I was just reading a thread where someone described a situation that happened to them, and then another poster said “I have a friend to whom this exact thing, in this exact sequence, happened recently” and I thought how crazy it would be if these two actually knew each other, or if after a while I discovered I actually _knew_ a Doper whose threads/posts I read/replied to. ---

Not somebody I directly knew, but somebody here used to live in my hometown and knew some folks that I also knew. I also knew the martial arts instructor of somebody who joined a while back, which also meant that I had visited and trained at their school while they were there. ---

I know one of my ex’s reads this message board. I do not know if he posts anything. And I found this out after I had posted to some of the “tell us about your psycho ex’s” threads we’ve had over the years. I never posted anything horrible, but I always wondered if he recognized the behaviors being described. ---

I discovered that another doper is a teacher/professor at the university I attend. That wouldn’t be such a big deal except it’s a small university in MS where I wouldn’t expect to find another doper close to me. I don’t know which professor, though. I’ve always been afraid to ask. I often pass people and wonder if that is her. ---

I have run into cross-connections with several Dopers who let me know on PM. I didn’t know them but we do know mutual people spread out all over the place. Since this board, became google searchable, I have had gotten some very interesting PM’s from people that joined just to ask me about something that I wrote a long time ago. The latest one was about a mutual friend who was up for the death penalty and didn’t get it but is still most likely in prison for life. He filled me in on enough things to make me motivated to send the friend a Christmas present in prison just because. The only Dopers that I know that I know in real life are people I worked with that saw me posting and asked about it and then joined. ---

Poster **Hoopy Frood** and I found out that we went to the same college and had several friends in common, thanks to his post in [this thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=533749&page=3). (He was relating a one-liner he’d told at a dorm movie night in college, and I happened to have actually been in the room when this happened, and remembered his one-liner.) ---

There are a few Dopers I have met in person – but oddly, not in many years. I think the last time I saw them was in 1990 – ten years before I joined the SDMB! ---

There are a few dopers who went to my high school. I’ve met at least one. I might have mentioned it to him back then but I was just lurking at the time; too cheap to pay for a subscription. Now we haven’t seen each other in a few years. Might as well out myself. Any other Audlobbers reading? ---

**Exapno Mapcase**. I knew he for several years from SF conventions. One day, I read Exapno’s posts (and his location) and realized who he was. I later confirmed it. ---

I ran across one of my law school classmates posting here about 4 or 5 years ago-recognised him based on the username, which he also used for our Yahoo group (and is pretty unique) and the posting style. But he only posted a few times. ---

AFAIK, this hasn’t quite happened to me, but since a very good friend and sometimes-colleague of mine is a Latin America ornithologist (well, soon he can call himself that officially), I’m pretty sure I would have run into **Colibri** one of these days. ---

Amusing, since she’s posted in this thread already, but **anu-la1979** and I used to work a couple of blocks from one another and found out after talking here that we were likely crossing paths on the subway (and, after we did meet on the board, we ran into each other multiple times on public transportation).
