Doping at Work - How much is too much? (THIS kind of Doping, not drug-related)

A large portion of my job requires me to do research online with various companies and suppliers. The one non-work related site I’ll occasionally visit is the local CBS affiliate’s site, but from what I’ve seen most people keep some kind of news site open all the time. I wait until lunch to check my email, the SDMB, and the news; it’s still sent out in the email report of who’s visiting what sites, but I don’t think anyone has a problem with it.

My current job doesn’t allow me access to the intraweb-thingie, so, no, I don’t dope from work.
My previous job was salaried and I doped a lot there. Sometimes my work was done in three hours and the rest of my time was spent screwing around on-line. Sometimes my job involved being there twelve hours with no “leisure time.” I didn’t feel guilty, it all eventually evened out. I got “called out” by one I.T. head, but when I mentioned (to her, in front of the owner/ company prez,) that I was checking my e-mail at eight o’clock at night when Everybody else was gone; I was left alone.

Peace - DESK

Yeah. Really. For a short time.

After a month or so of being paid to do nothing I think I’d get bored.

I work an overnight shift in a lab.

On a slow night this is where I hang all night.

Other nights are so busy I never get to sit.

Is this normal? Is the main function of the IT department to check up on inappropriate use of work computers? Hold me, I’m scared of the working world!

I’m under the impression that it’s some sort of automated program used to generate the lists and emails.

Hold on a minute - I didn’t say doing nothing, I said goofing off (well, you originally said goofing off). You know, the stuff you do on your own time and don’t get paid for, except getting paid for it. Puttering, as it were.

shimmery, do you read “Dilbert” comics? Do you realize that there are variable grains of truth in all of them? My experience working with large corporations is that not only do they monitor internet usage by staff, but they’ll block large swaths of sites, too. And although you often get the message, “This site is a no-no; you have been reported to IT.” you may not get much fallout from it. You never know how many chances you get until you hit the magic number of indiscretions that will get you a formal door-closed sit-down with your supervisor.

Is that helping at all?

Heh. The only blocked site that I’ve ever encountered is our own internal "The Customer Rules" page. Co-workers in other locations can pull it up, but not the people in our office, for some reason.

Oh sure - to put it that way. If I got paid to couch with a cup of coffee, my laptop and a bad movie on TV… sure. I’d take that job.

Oh wait. I did that once in my youth as an “Alarm Center Dispatcher” working nights. 9 hours of nothing but TV and coffee (no interwebs) and one hour of talking on the phone. After six months I went a bit woggy.

But at home dinking around part time… where do I sign up?

I think I’d have to ask for a pretty good wage though. I mean, that job would be cutting into my personal time.

I’ve only been doping for a short time, but am visiting the site more than many others I like. I am a night dispatcher in a trucking company and have long stretches with little or nothing to do. With a T-1 connection and a good computer, I do a lot online while here at work, more than I do at home!
I have a website, a discussion forum, sell on Ebay, and monitor on three other forums, most of it done from work. By the way, my boss is aware of all this and doesn’t mind as long as my job gets done. He certainly wouldn’t want me to go to sleep!

That settles it, I’m dropping out of the capitalist economy and joining a commune in Vermont. I can devise a maple-syrup-powered generator and Dope all day long.

Oh, you think you can drop out of the capitalist economy…

(Is it wrong to enjoy scaring young people this much? So bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, with so much optimism for life to kick out of them. )

Can I go to the commune too?

whimper

Only if you help me pedal the generator…
