DOTA 2 invite from Steam

Looking for an invite as well if anyone has one.

Still have had no luck getting in to the Beta.

Which is weird 'cause I’ve been getting into betas left and right.

Beta testing like a mofo.

They don’t give out invites for people to send, they stopped that months ago because people were selling them. You fill out the survey and wait to be selected.

you sure? I thought i read something from these days that said theyre handing out invites again…

That means valve is inviting people, not that they’re giving out passes to invite your friends.

Well God damn it!Vale should invite me. I’m the coolest Steam player that has ever lived.

Well I might nto be cool enough for Valve, but I am definitely cool anough for Gambit and Pavke, who have been generous enough to send me an invite!

So I’ll be joining you lucky guys soon. Can’t wait!

man, and my big mistake was accidentally filling out the survey on a mac… screwed myself out of any chance for an invite… if anyone does have one available - I’ve been a big dota player for over 5 years

I’ll be playing the beta sometime this weekend.

What is the difference between Dota 2 and Dota 2 Test?

The test client is a smaller player pool that they test major new content (such as heroes) with before it is added to the main client, which is being used for tournaments and other things that you don’t want to muck about with. Everyone is in it, but it isn’t intended to be the primary means of testing. For example, Bane was in the test client for a week so they could catch any serious bugs with him before he was added to the main client.

I got my beta invite last Thursday or Friday. I received my invite 3-4 weeks after I applied. This thread inspiried me to apply for the beta since I played DOTA for 5 or 6 years. I’ve played 3 co-op games vs bots and one game of humans vs humans.

I had a heck of a time with the shortcuts for hero’s spells. My fingers still remembered the shortcuts for DOTA. I’d hit the key 5 times to stun someone and nothing would happen and I’d die. In DOTA 2 it seems that all shortcuts are same for each hero. (Q,W,E,R are the shortcuts if I rememer correctly). I know you can customize them but I figure it will be better in the long run if I learn the new ones.

I have to say it is really hard for me to adjust to the new graphics. All the heros in DOTA 2 look exactly the same to me and it’s hard for me to recognize the hero by looking at it. This is probably because my brain is adjusting to 6 years of conditioning and thousands of hours playing DOTA.

The one game of human vs human I played the teammate in my lane gave me a verbal lashing for auto attacking the creeps. I was last hitting, but would auto attack in between last hits.

Is the ranking system turned off in beta? I was looking forward to being matched up with other players similar to my skill level. After I won my first game it seems my rank didn’t change.

It’s enabled and working, but it’s hidden. The only real way to figure out where you’re at is to search for your own games and then see what skill level filter you’re under when you solo queue. There is a visible XP thing, but that’s been disabled since… September (?).

You are correct, I was looking at the visible XP thing. Thanks for the info.

There is a ranking system but it is fairly loose. I don’t think there is a large enough sample to do true matchmaking where you’re always against people of very similar skill level. This is a bit more muddied by the fact that you can queue either solo or as a party.

As for auto-attacking the creeps, in the laning phase it’s best to not autoattack unless you are attempting a last hit. So you can click around to move until you’re ready to last hit. If you’re always auto-attacking it pushes the creeps to the enemy tower, which isn’t safe for you early on. Unfortunately your laning partner was a jerk and snapped at you instead of calmly giving advice.

Just letting everybody know that Valve just released two additional Dota 2 invite gifts to virtually everybody, including myself.

There should be a LOT of available invites, and I’d be happy to bring some other members of the SDMB gamer crew in, if anybody’s interested.

I have a noob question. How do you tell if a player already left? I see the message after 5minutes it’s safe to leave the game.

If you bring up the scoreboard (third button from the top-lift,) it’ll display “Disconnected” instead of the player’s hero and hero level. Also, disconnected players appear either green or red on the mini-map, depending on what team they’re on. If you missed the “It’s safe to leave.” message pop-up, it’ll also be displayed near the disconnect button on the play tab, if the game is safe to leave.

Thank you. I must have been missing the original message if I was concentrating on other things.

Valve released a spectator client today. And if I understand it right, you can buy into beta access. http://blog.dota2.com/

I am pretty much completely foreign to Dota in any form, and was intrigued enough to start reading more about it tonight … and jesuschrist I’m already overwhelmed and scared of this game! I knew what it was years and years ago, but never played. The more I read now (especially this thread), the more I think I am turned off. But the popularity of it has me curious enough to give it a try eventually. Not enough to buy in though. I tried to watch a recorded match, and have no fucking idea what that was all about. Steep learning curve indeed.

Is DOTA2 free to play now? It just showed up in my library as well as the library of all my friends.
