Double hip replacement!

Thank you for your stories FluffyBob and EastUmpqua.
My pain level is about 3 - 4 with short spikes of level 5. On top of that, my limping seems
to be making by knees hurt. Pain is probably not as bad as yours was but I would like
to get this fixed before it gets worse. Elimating the pain would also help to relive alot
of the stress I have right now.

I had a boss who had both hips replaced at once. He was in his early fifties and quite healthy, don;t know enough to say why the surgery was needed. He was even a black belt in karate.

He had both done at once so he wouldn’t have to have two recovery periods. The guy was a workaholic. He did recover quickly too.

I hope my only natural hip lasts for a while. I’m trying to still do the post-surgery Physical Therapy exercises every day.

I went camping at Blue River in Oregon last weekend. First time camping since the surgery. I had a great time. It’s nice to be able to hike, get in and out of my inflatable boat, and ride a jet ski. Good to hear you’re doing well.

Made the call today and set up an appointment to get the right hip replaced on
Sept 21st. After that heals I’ll get the left one done. Knees are feeling worse - wonder
if I will have to get those replaced too? Feeling scared but at the same time glad that
we live in a age where this sort of surgery is commonplace.

FluffyBob and EastUmpqua: Hope you are having a speedy and pain free recovery.

Good luck with the replacement! More than one friend has told me that their knee pain improved once they’d completed physical therapy and started walking normally on the new hip, so it’s possible you’ll get lucky there as well. How exciting!

That’s what happened to my father. After he had his hips replaced, his gait was so much better that he didn’t need to have his knees done.

Great news @X.L.Lent !

I think fixing your hips is going to improve your posture and muscle balance and likely help with the knees.

I was having a lot of sciatica and lower back pain (couple bad discs) before the surgery. I have had nearly zero since. YMMV

I still have some stiffness and hip pain occasionally. I think it is due to weak muscles and too much sitting. I am working very long hours right now, mostly at a desk, and struggling to keep up with all the exercises I am supposed to be doing. When I am doing my exercises regularly I am generally in no pain.

For those that have received a hip replacement, what type of material was the replacement:

Metal on plastic - femoral head or ball is metal and the socket or cup is plastic

Ceramic on plastic - Ceramic femoral head and cup is plastic; or

Ceramic on ceramic - Ceramic femoral head and cup is ceramic

My understanding is that the majority or metal on plastic as they are the cheapest to produce. Ceramic is supposedly the least likely material to be rejected by the body and is the longest lasting.

Tomorrow is the day! In less than 24 hours I will have a new right hip joint. I have been dreading and looking forward to this for the past several weeks. Feeling very nervious right now. Wish me good luck!

@FluffyBob and @EastUmpqua I hope that you have completely recovered and are doing well now.

Best wishes to you

Good luck!

Good luck!

Terrific news. It will be a hard few days but in a few weeks you will feel amazing.

I still get a little soreness but it is totally due to a desk job and not keeping up with my exercises. I was just telling someone I had not taken an alleve or anything for pain in two months. I have relied on NSAIDS for years and I don’t even think about them anymore.

I understand that nervousness. I’ve had both knees done and my left hip may be next. Best of luck ahead. Hope this ends your pain.

Back from the hospital. Had a bad reaction to the anesthesia that made me feel nauseated, so they kept me overnight. Pain right now is somewhat severe when I move about but seems to slowly getting
better.

@FluffyBob - it’s good to hear that you are doing better

That’s all for now. Going back to bed for some more rest and will do some of the exercises later today.

I’m glad you’re home and doing okay! Remember, the first week is the hardest, and then things get steadily better (do your exercises faithfully)!

One week anniversary of right hip replacement as of yesterday. Could hardly move around the first
few days but mobility has very slowly been returning. Have started to use crutches in the last two days but still mostly use the walker. The opioid pain killer gave me horrible nausea and made it difficult to
read or watch TV for more than a few minutes. Switched to extra strength Tylenol yesterday and feel
much better - nausea is gone but pain did increase slightly. Right knee is hurting sometimes - it has been giving me trouble for a few years now and perhaps will have to be done next. First Physical therapy session will be this afternoon - hoping that it will go well.
