Those stoners, and you, missed an opportunity for an epic snowball fight. I am more annoyed by the pre-teens I see smoking cigarettes outside the mall than I would be by teens smoke pot. Your first remark was perfect and you should have left it at that. You can’t really change they behavior right now, they are already doing it and they probably don’t want to “back down” but next time they might well remember to be more discreet. ---

So me and my bud were walking down the street after the storm. He had picked up some pixie stix at the retro candy store and we were having a hoot playing with them like when we were kids. Then we saw some dorky guy wearing one of those ear flap hats trying to shovel some snow on his property. He probably couldn’t see too well because that stupid hat was too big, but he started shouting something about getting off his lawn and couldn’t tell we were a couple of old dudes. We tried to explain to him we had the candy tubes and asked him if he wanted some, but he acted all weird, and it looked like he tried to throw some snow at us with the shovel, but the wind pretty much blew it all back on him, so we just laughed and walked away. ---

I don’t know the OP’s location, but if it is indeed Chilliwack, BC, his young son is probably about five years away from smoking his own pot. You don’t want to expose your kids to drug use, don’t live in BC. I lived in BC for 19 years. Born in a town located somewhere between nowhere and south of nowhere, and I didn’t even see pot until I moved to Alberta. I went to parties, I went to college, hell I even went to college parties, and if people were smoking pot, they were very discrete. Sorry, the idea that if you live in BC you must be a stoner is a pet peeve of mine. ---

With a Medical Marijuana card, to boot. Hey, OP, don’t take your kids to a Medical Marijuana city. I had a number of 30-somethings, sporting business suits and briefcases, walk by me. Financial district in SF. All puffing on joints. Numerous times, M-F. ---

I’d probably ask if they had any extra to sell. 🆒 I am not the OP getting all uptight about some kids smokin’ a doob within 500 yards of his children. Note: I live in a state where pot is still highly illegal for pretty much any purpose AND I live within 1000 feet of a school, which means if anyone gets popped holding, using, buying or selling, they automatically get 3 years in prison. Yet I \*still \*wouldn’t call the cops. I don’t have kids. I don’t care who gets high or where they do it. Also, I didn’t realize the OP lives in BC – is it legal to walk down the street smoking a doob there? If so, then I take back my previous post and have nothing to say, with the possible exception of “lighten up, Francis.” ---

Occasionally, our business works out of my dad’s house for various reasons and he’s got a pot smoking neighbor who drives me insane. This dude is older (but not old, maybe mid 50s), stays home and watches a little toddler girl (I assume a grand daughter), and he just chain smokes pot outside of his house _all day_ (can you chain smoke pot? I don’t even know, but he’s doing the equivalent). He sits at a little table in his driveway and I’m not exaggerating when I say he lights up starting at about 8 AM and it doesn’t stop all day-- the whole neighborhood constantly stinks like weed. Take now, for example: it’s beautiful outside and I’d love to open a window. For the sake of discussion, I just did. . . and weed smell wafted throughout the entire house. Before you think I’m being a bit unreasonable-- this dude lives _four houses down_ and the smell is still that strong. The hell, sir? Go smoke in your own house, don’t stink up the damned neighborhood. ---

I aknowledge that I behaved like an arse here, which is why I was one half of the double-pit. I do realize that I opened myself up to retaliation, however, I have seen one of the two around, and I know where he lives too (and I think he knows this). Not to retaliate myself, but to assist the police, or talk to the parents in the event of vandalism. I live in a nice part of a Canadian city (not in BC), so I’m pretty sure this incident is entirely concluded. Yes, my kid will someday be exposed to pot. I realize that. But, regardless of your personal opinion on the matter, it is a drug, and it is against the law. I was not out of line in asking them to knock it off - only in my delivery. Would I have asked two big scary thug life types? Well, I have asked a member of a street gang to clean up his spit off the changeroom floor at the gym. I told him it was disrespectful to everyone in the gym, and he cleaned it up. ---

When was this? There is a lot of pot in BC…well in Canada really. Its entirely possible that this has changed since you were growing up, going to parties, etc ---

The legality or morality of the offending leaves and their smoke is the difference. I don’t smoke pot, but I had a girlfriend once who smoked weed constantly through the day. Once I was following her car with mine (maybe dropping one off at a garage) and the smell was so strong that I could plainly smell her pipe driving behind her at a safe distance on the freeway. That’s a strong smell. Aren’t there ordinances or condo/neighborhood rules that would as well apply to cigarettes? .. I mean, an annoying smell is a nuisance, regardless of the legality. ---

I remember a time when it seemed most kids were at least minimally concerned with how they conducted themselves around their neighborhood, and would think twice before interacting with a neighbor in a manner that might make it back to their parents. But those days were long gone by the time my now-adult kids were young. I’m not convinced that was a worse state of affairs. I’m sure we lacked sufficient self esteem. 😛 Of course, I was lucky to grow up in Chicago, where we had alleys for doing what we did not wish to be observed. ---
