# Double posting

Lately it seems if I post and have to wait more than 2 minutes or so for the confirmation message, I end up with a double post. Occasionally if it’s taking too long, I’ll just hit Stop, and go back to the forum manually, and sure enough- double post.
What the heck is going on? Anyone else having this problem?

Even if you get hung up, the post has almost always gone through (although my most recent one doesn’t seem to have bumped the thread). Advice from someone who has _never_ double posted: hit “back”, copy your post, refresh the thread. Nineteen times out of twenty _on the slowest day_, your post will be there.

I still don’t know how to explain it. I make sure to never press “Submit Reply” more than once, either from the quick reply box or the post reply page, and I never have double posts. After I press Submit Reply, if the server hangs, I will go back to the forum display page and call up the thread again. I almost never use the back button in my browser to call up the reply form.
If it does indeed happen when you hit Submit Reply only once, all I can say is “must be a bug of some kind.”

If you find yourself waiting for a very long time after pressing the submit button, hit the stop button, copy the text to your clipboard and press the preview post button; if your post has been successfully added, you’ll see it, if it hasn’t you can paste it in and try again.

OK, it’s not confined to the quick reply. I just got the message saying that members are only allowed to post once within a certain period of time. This indicates that I hit submit more than once, which I am absolutely certain I did not. This happened after previewing my reply to the [Band Name Game](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?s=&postid=2115842#post2115842).

As far as I know, there have been no double posts in that thread. (hey, it’s my thread; I check on it every once in a while 😃 ) Duplicates, maybe, but no double posts yet. (unless all the double posts have been deleted since that would affect the continuity and flow of the game)
Although what would happen if anyone accidentally double-posted an OP? Has anyone ever done this? Is it even possible to do this? I was afraid that I’d done this in my recent Pit thread about people giving you rides, but thankfully I didn’t. (I’d post a link, but after 45 minutes of trying to access that page because the boards are slow yet _again_, I don’t think I will)

You end up with two separate threads with the same OP. Ever see a thread closed with the comment “duplicate thread”? That’s usually what happened.

Yikes… I think that may have been the explanation for a thread I posted **in triplicate** in this forum some time ago. Fortunately, the mods deleted the two duplicates without my having to ask. _breathes sigh of relief_
And yes, I have seen suplicate threads, with one of them eventually being closed. Although sometimes the explanation for those is that the OP wasn’t getting any replies to the original thread, so he/she starts a new, duplicate thread with the same information as in the original.

Oops… that should have read “ **duplicate** threads” in my second paragraph… I wasn’t trying to get into the matters of supplication! (though going to the mods with an attitude of supplication might not be such a bad idea if you want them to do certain things for you)
I think I should just go to bed.
