I read that as the OP not understanding the headlines because the kid was basically being led uphill, not climbing a mountain.
I’m reminded of the time I had sex with Scarlett Johansson. We weren’t actually naked, and she didn’t even know I was in the same building, but I could have theoretically passed at a less than penis length from her. Maybe not without being tasered, but great sex does not come without great sacrifice.
So “Duke Had Sex with Scarlett Johansson!”
On re-read I agree that my OP could have been better written. It certainly was not meant to sound bitter or hateful toward the child. I was just disgusted by the idiotic, misleading media coverage. The NY Daily News article where the hike was described as “death defying scale of Mt Everest” was on my mind when I used the term “stabby”.
I actually feel kinda bad for this kid - he did accomplish something to be proud of, but his Dad and the media have pimped him out with these shameful exaggerations. Sadly, he might from now on be known as the “Down’s Syndrome Kid who Claimed to Have Scaled Everest but Actually was Simply led by the hand to one of it’s Base Camps”
Which is STILL greater renown than I’ll ever have. * sulks off *
Please explain to me what his Dad did that was sooooooo fucking terrible?
Labrador, didnt you know his dad iis basicaly a pimp ? (see explanation by op,that he pimped out his kid)
I was in a diving expedition that recovered the safe from the Andrea Doria.
Well, actually I just rode the Staten Island Ferry, but it’s pretty much the same thing.
I never said anything he did was “fucking terrible”. “Doing his kid a disservice” is the accurate description.
In holding these press conferences and interviews, the Dad had a duty to make sure that factual information was provided. A phrase such as “it was an incredible moment” is what you would expect to hear from someone discussing their summit of Everest, not the end of a guided hike part way up the mountain. The Dad should have make it clear that this was not a summit, and been careful to make sure any claim of the kid actually scaling the mountain was avoided.
According to snow pea, the dad pimps out his kid. However, Im not sure how good of a pimp he is though, no reports on if he even bothers to wear purple hats with a feather, …mostly I think he tries to provide opportunities for his child to experience things that will challenge him and strengthen his self esteem to know that he is able to accomplish more than some hateful people might otherwise want him to.
…unlike the kid.
mmm
I lol’d,
The more I think abut this story, the less sense it makes. Why set a goal of “only going part way up a mountain”, instead of choosing a mountain that the kid could actually summit (and be the first with DS to do)? There are plenty of lesser peaks that the kid could possibly have scaled, and then had the big FACTUAL headline of having climbed it.
Or possibly not - the fact that he was wearing cotton city pants instead of technical layers is a big huge red flag - rule #1 in mountaineering is that Cotton Kills. So maybe actually summiting a 12,000 foot peak is not doable for him. Still, gotta wonder about the decision to have his big achievement be “doing just part of” a mountain.
You’re a bigger idiot than anyone mentioned in this thread so far. If I had a son with Down’s Syndrome, it would absolutely be an incredible moment if I saw him hike for 10 days up to 17,000+ feet. I’m sure the breakdown in communication didnt come as a result of the words “incredible moment”. In fact, I see no evidence that any of the reporters who ran a story didnt understand that the kid only went to base camp.
So, tell me again what your problem is with the dad.
He’s a poopyhead.
This reminds me of the time I walked around the world.
Not even this reporter, who headlined his article "US teen with Down Syndrome scales Mount Everest" , then leads the article with this extremely misleading paragraph?:
New York: A 15-year-old US boy has possibly become one of the first person ever with Down Syndrome to have scaled the Mount Everest - the world’s tallest mountain. Eli Reimer is also possibly the first American teen with the Syndrome - to have made the exceptional ascent last month, when he reached a staggering 17,600 feet after nearly two weeks of walking.
It’s not till the third paragraph is it finally admitted that he only made it to one of the base camps.
That the dad is a pimp and not a very good one…
What? Your reply makes no fucking sense. By your own admission, the reporter knows that the kid only made it to base camp. How the fuck does that not support my post 100%?
Jesus, the stupid burns.
What’s stupid is puffing up the (legitimate, for a child) accomplishment with lies and misrepresentations. That’s actually quite insulting.
LOL, I’m so using this in a different thread. ![]()
Labrador deceiver, the thing is, people like that have a need to take something good and make it into a negative. No good act goes unpunished. Out of all the shitty things people do, pitting this is just well, shitty
