# Downton Abbey and Marigold

I just finished bingeing on DA and was thinking about how it all ended up and I realized I must have missed an episode, as I can’t remember how the family dealt with the tenant farmer’s wife to get Marigold back into the Grantham household. Can anyone fill me in? Thanks!

They played it down, but Edith basically just went and took her. The tenant farmer allowed it. The tenant farmers wife wasn’t real happy about it.

If you remember the ep where the whole household is at the fair. Marigold goes missing. And of course the farmers wife has swiped Lady Ediths ‘ward’
It kinda comes to a head and before Lady Mary can spill the beans, Lady Edith tells the truth to Lord Grantham.
God, I know too much about this show. I scare myself.

Thank you, B. I remember now. They had to play it so the tenant’s wife was as obsessed as Edith.
Those houses and the clothes, plus the music which made my tear up AT LEAST once every episode, the cars, and so much else–really, unexpectedly, drew me in. Next up is the movie.

The Movie has been playing on HBO recently. I want to see it. I don’t subscribe to HBO but we are in a free-view at the moment. I hope I can catch it.

Edith doesn’t tell Robert the truth about Marigold, he figures it out himself.
Mary is the last in the family to know the truth about Marigold, so she was still in the dark at the time of the pig fair. Once she’s in the loop, she saves the beans to spill all over Bertie when Edith says they’re getting married.
Mary had accepted the story that Cora concocted that the Drewes had realized that it was too much to take care of Marigold and couldn’t afford it, so they asked Edith, whom the knew doted on her, to take her on.

I’m pretty sure Mary accepted the story because she just didn’t care. It is just Edith after all.

You’d think that, but Mary is very inquisitive about why Edith would want to take on a child who’s not her own.

I think there is one 3-second camera focus on Mary where I half expected some sort of facial expression and music that showed that she was on the verge of making a pretty good guess. I think she was at the top of the stairs right before a luncheon or tea, so had other immediate concerns.

Mary is just the frickin’ worst.
The fair episode is on right now on my PBS.
It is still upsetting the way they handled the farmer’s wife. She doesn’t know the truth so of course she is upset that the rich landlord’s family just swept in an stole a child she had bonded with. I always thought that story should have ended with Edith sitting down with the farmer’s wife and telling her–but not telling her–you know what I am saying? As it is, the farmer is just “yeah… we’ll just move away.” and everyone else just being “yea, you do that.”

I remember a scene with Cora and Robert walking down the lane and he gets the whole story. I may have imagined it but I seem to remember a scene with Edith and Robert and it’s discussed. Who knows? My head often adds scenes to movies and shows.

Hey, now, if you’ve got a better way for Mr. Mason to get a farm closer to the Abbey so that Daisy could more easily split her time between the two, I’d like to hear it. And if it emotionally scars deeply an innocent woman and forces a man to abandon the land his family has worked for 150 years then so be it. After all, Mr. Drewe received a warm hand shake from Robert for all his family’s sacrifice. Very warm, indeed.

They discuss it during their visit to Brancaster, but it’s Robert who brings it up.

Yep, earlier in the episode Robert remarks how Marigold reminds him of someone but he can’t put a finger on it. Cora dismisses it.
Later they are walking and he says “I remember who Marigold reminds me of.”…we’re going to assume that he’s going to say “Edith” which would allow Cora to dismiss it again with “oh little blonde redheads all look the same”…but he says “She reminds me of Michael Gregson. Tell me I’m wrong.”
No way to get out of that really.
